Race Format

UPDATED FORMAT FOR THE FINAL RACE!

Traditional cross country races feature a mass start on an extended starting line. Due to COVID-19 we have opted to split the start of the race into smaller waves. Runners can sign up and create or join a team, and will enter their anticipated finishing time for 5k XC. This time will be used to assign starting corrals - teams will not necessarily start together. Runners will receive an email prior to race day with their corral assignment, and it will be printed on the back of the bib number as well. On race day, runners are free to warm up on the property as needed and should remain socially distanced. Each corral will be limited to 100 registrants, and corrals will be split in half to form smaller groups of 50 runners (sorted by bib number correlated to expected finish time). The starter will call individual waves to the starting line beginning at 9:00 AM where 50 runners will be sent off as one group. This process allows for a more authentic XC race experience with runners competing with others of similar ability, without creating a large pack of runners. All runners will receive an official chip time.

9:00 AM - (Corral A) Women's A Race, first group of 50 runners
9:05 AM - (Corral A) Women's A Race, second group of 50 runners
9:10 AM - (Corral B) Women's B Race, first group of 50 runners
9:15 AM - (Corral B) Women's B Race, second group of 50 runners

9:40 AM - (Corral C) Men's A Race, first group of 50 runners
9:45 AM - (Corral C) Men's A Race, second group of 50 runners
9:50 AM - (Corral D) Men's B Race, first group of 50 runners
9:55 AM - (Corral D) Men's B Race, second group of 50 runners

The race will be held rain or shine.

Team Competition

We understand that many high school and college athletes will not have the chance to compete as a team in cross country this fall. We want to try and solve that problem by introducing a team competition! Athletes can form teams of 5 people to compete against other teams in their chosen division (middle school, high school, college, and open/mixed). Only teams in the open/mixed division can have a mix of ages and/or genders. We will score complete teams (5 people) by cumulative time (the total time it took each member of the team to complete the course).

Course

The course will be 3.1 miles (5K) for the MDXC Series - Hunt Valley race. Runners will run on grass throughout the property, so spikes are acceptable. The course begins on the interior of the race track and follows a mowed path around the scenic Shawan Downs property finishing at the race track finish line.

Awards

We will give out awards as follows:

  • 1st place male and female teams in the middle school, high school, and college divisions
  • 1st place team in the open/mixed division.
  • 1st-3rd place male and female runners in the middle school, high school, college, and open/mixed divisions

COVID-19 Race Protocols

We take health and safety very seriously. Based on guidance from the CDC and local health departments we have created the following operating protocols for MDXC:

  1. All race staff will wear face coverings for the duration of the event.
  2. Race registration will be limited to 100 individuals per corral
  3. All registrants will receive an email 3 days prior to the race reminding runners who feel ill or believe they may have come in contact with someone exposed to COVID-19 to stay home.
  4. Hand sanitizer stations will be positioned at the packet pickup area, starting line, and finish line. Participants will be encouraged to utilize them throughout the event.
  5. Runners will not be required to wear masks while running, but must wear a face covering before and after the race while at the park.

About the Maryland XC Series

THE THIRD RACE OF THE MARYLAND XC SERIES IS MDXC KENT ISLAND ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25TH. PLEASE JOIN US! CLICK HERE FOR MORE RACE INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER.

The Maryland XC Series (MDXC) was created to give athletes an opportunity to compete in cross country races around the state. With the cancellation of many fall athletic seasons and open competitions, the need to bring runners of all ages and abilities together safely was evident. Charm City Run and the Live Give Run Foundation have prepared a race environment that will allow for safe and exciting racing action among individuals and runner-created teams. We hope to include 4 races in the series, and will continue to update information as additional dates and locations are confirmed. We look forward to welcoming everyone this fall!
