The 14th Annual AFCEA Central Maryland 5K & Family Fun Run/Walk Race for Excellence will be held on October 17th at 9AM.
The AFCEA Central Maryland Chapter (AFCEA-CMD) is a non-profit membership association dedicated to providing an ethical, interactive forum for sharing knowledge and building relationships across government, military, industry and academia.
We accomplish our goal by promoting the continuing education of current IT professionals and supporting the education of future leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Each year our AFCEA-CMD chapter is able to award over $200,000 to qualified students and teachers through scholarships, endowments, and grants.
The 14th Annual AFCEA-CMD 5K & Family Fun Run/Walk is an uplifting, family-oriented, community event that benefits AFCEA’s Central Maryland STEM Scholarship Fund.
Join over 1,000 participants and spectators on a beautiful October day to take part in this run/walk!
All event activities will take place in Columbia, MD, with both the start and finish lines on Columbia Gateway Drive and the After Party at Nottingham’s on Stanford Boulevard.
Now through October 13th, 2021 ($5 price increase after the 13th)

Shirts are not guaranteed for participants who register after September 30th. There are no refunds of entry given for this event.
We have created a virtual race option for those who would like to participate but are not local, or do not feel comfortable attending an in-person race at this time. Here's how the virtual race works:
1. Register for the virtual event, and sign up for text or e-mail notifications
2. Your race swag will be available for pickup at our pre race packet pickup sessions, or can be mailed to you.
3. You'll receive a text or email (if you opt in) when the race "starts" on October 14th.
4. Run your race and submit your results either by text message or email (if you've opted in) or by heading to the results page here by October 17th at 11:59 PM Eastern Time). Results update in real time as people submit their times. Be sure to take a selfie and post when you report your results or by going to the runsignup.com photo page here.
5. Enjoy yourself!
NOTE: Virtual race performances are not eligible for the overall event awards, but we'll certainly be acknowledging the winners in our post-race communication.

T-shirts are guaranteed to registrants who register by September 30th, 2021. Water and splits on the 5K course; a light breakfast (Granola bars, light fruit, Danish, water, etc.) will be provided to registered runners immediately after the AFCEA 5K.

o Largest team award goes to the team that has the most number of 5K finishers (Virtual 5K team registrants will only be included in team count for those who finish their virtual race by 8AM.
o Fastest team award goes to the team that has the fastest combined 5K time of its top four finishers. Both will receive trophies.

As we slowly return to racing in 2021, we want to be completely transparent with our policies regarding refunds, transfers, and cancellations. If you are interested in signing up for this race please read this section carefully prior to registering. All interested participants will be shown these policies during the registration process and must agree to adhere to them in order to be admitted to the event.
Race registration fees (and the processing charge from RunSignup) are not refundable. These funds are used to pay for race premiums, permits, supplies, staffing, and other costs incurred before, during, and after the event is held. To be consistent and fair to everyone we cannot make exceptions to this policy.
We offer the option for registrants to transfer their entry to another eligible participant or transfer events (in person vs. virtual) up to two weeks prior to the race (October 3rd, 2021). There is a processing fee of $10 to transfer (for participant transfers this is paid by the new registrant). After this deadline passes we are unable to allow transfers as race materials have been received and prepped for the event. Again, to be consistent and fair to everyone we cannot make exceptions to this policy. Registrants may transfer their entry to another registrant or can transfer events (in person vs. virtual) by going into their profile on runsignup.com and choosing "Manage Registration" next to the race (options are then at the top of the page)
2020 showed just how unpredictable our world can be, and the running industry was certainly no exception. We know that it's important to have as much information at your disposal when making a decision whether to sign up for a race or not, and we want you to know exactly what your options will be should the 2021 in-person race not be able to take place as originally planned. Safety of participants, volunteers, sponsors and staff is of utmost importance. We are committed to following all local, state, national and CDC guidelines at the 2021 AFCEA Central Maryland Race for Excellence - 5K & Family Fun Run/Walk. Charm City Run Events (our event management company) was fortunate enough to safely hold several in-person events in 2020 and 2021, and has developed efficient and effective race day COVID-19 protocols and procedures. While guidelines and health metrics continue to evolve, we are prepared with procedures that may include, but are not limited to: caps on participation consistent with outdoor gathering guidelines; mandatory mask wearing for participants, volunteers and staff at all times (with the exception of when actively participating in the race); minimal spectators; social distancing and small group wave starts for participants; sanitizer stations throughout the event space; elimination of bag check and shirt exchanges; sealed grab-and-go water bottles at water stops; individually wrapped post-race snacks.
