Description


The 17th Annual AFCEA Central Maryland 5K & Family Fun Run/Walk Race for Excellence will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 9AM.  A virtual option will also be available.

The AFCEA Central Maryland Chapter (AFCEA-CMD) is a non-profit membership association dedicated to providing an ethical, interactive forum for sharing knowledge and building relationships across government, military, industry and academia.

We accomplish our goal by promoting the continuing education of current IT professionals and supporting the education of future leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Each year our AFCEA-CMD chapter is able to award over $200,000 to qualified students and teachers through scholarships, endowments, and grants.

The 17th Annual AFCEA-CMD 5K & Family Fun Run/Walk is an uplifting, family-oriented, community event that benefits AFCEA’s Central Maryland STEM Scholarship Fund.

Join over 1,000 participants and spectators on a beautiful April day to take part in this run/walk!

All event activities will take place in Columbia, MD, with both the start and finish lines on Columbia Gateway Drive and the After Party at Reckless Shepherd Brewing Company in Columbia, MD.

Registration Fees

Race Fees:

5K:
Now through April 19th, 2024 ($5 price increase after the 19th)
$45 - Ages 13+
$30 - Active duty military (ID will be required at packet pickup)
$25 - Ages 12 and under

Family Fun Run/Walk (approximately 1 mile):
Now until April 19th, 2024 ($5 price increase after the 19th)  (NO TIMING CHIP)
$30 - Ages 13+
$20 - Active duty military (ID will be required at packet pickup)
$15 - Ages 12 and under

Shirts are not guaranteed for participants who register after April 5th. There are no refunds of entry given for this event. 


Virtual Race Option

We have created a virtual race option for those who would like to participate but are not local or are unable to attend the in person race. Here's how the virtual race works:

1. Register for the virtual event, and sign up for text or e-mail notifications
2. Your race swag will be available for pickup at our pre race packet pickup sessions, or can be mailed to you.
3. You'll receive a text or email (if you opt in) when the race "starts" on April 22nd.
4. Run your race and submit your results either by text message or email (if you've opted in) or by heading to the results page here by April 28th at 11:59 PM Eastern Time). Results update in real time as people submit their times. Be sure to take a selfie and share on social media.  NOTE: Virtual 5k participants must report their 5k completion to be counted toward the Largest Team Award.
5. Virtual 5K team registrants will only be included in Largest Team competition for those who finish their virtual race by 8AM on Saturday 27 April, 2024.
6. Enjoy yourself!

NOTE: Virtual race performances are not eligible for the overall event awards.

 

Packet Pickup:

Team Captains are able to pick up packets and are responsible for distribution.  Individuals on team may pick up their own packets if packets are not being picked up by Team Captain.

Course:

USAT&F-certified this is a loop course that is relatively flat, but the inclines are certain to provide a challenge

Amenities:
 

T-shirts are guaranteed to registrants who register by April 5th, 2024. Water and splits on the 5K course; a light breakfast (Granola bars, light fruit, danish, gatorade, water, etc.) will be provided to registered runners immediately after the AFCEA 5K.


Awards: 

Awards: 

·         Top three male and female finishers overall based on gun times

·         Top 3 finishers in following age groups based on chip times:

              o    9 and under

              o    10-19

              o    20-29

              o    30-39

              o    40-49

              o    50-59

              o    60-69

              o    70 and over.

·         Team Awards

              o    Largest team award goes to the team that has the most number of 5K finishers (Virtual 5K team registrants will only be included in team count for those who finish their virtual race by 8AM on Saturday 27 April, 2024).  Volunteers will count in the Largest Team category and must be signed -up prior to the race and checked in at the race site with the Volunteer Lead POC.

              o    Fastest team award goes to the team that has the fastest combined 5K time of its top four finishers who are employees of the company.  Fastest team will be based on chip times and not gun times.

              o    Trophies will be given to the top three teams in each category.

Please Note:

Please do not enter Leidos through Benjamin Franklin Drive. Proceed on Columbia Gateway Drive to the next unmarked driveway.

NO PETS will be allowed at the Franklin Center for this event. This is a liability issue so please do not bring pets – they will be asked to be removed…no exceptions.

REFUND, TRANSFER, AND CANCELLATION POLICIES listed below.

We want to be completely transparent with our policies regarding refunds, transfers, and cancellations. If you are interested in signing up for this race please read this section carefully prior to registering. All interested participants will be shown these policies during the registration process and must agree to adhere to them in order to be admitted to the event.

Refunds

Race registration fees (and the processing charge from RunSignup) are not refundable. These funds are used to pay for race premiums, permits, supplies, staffing, and other costs incurred before, during, and after the event is held. To be consistent and fair to everyone we cannot make exceptions to this policy.

Transfers

We offer the option for registrants to transfer their entry to another eligible participant or transfer events (in person vs. virtual) up to two weeks prior to the race (April 13, 2024). There is a processing fee of $10 to transfer (for participant transfers this is paid by the new registrant). After this deadline passes we are unable to allow transfers as race materials have been received and prepped for the event. Again, to be consistent and fair to everyone we cannot make exceptions to this policy. Registrants may transfer their entry to another registrant or can transfer events (in person vs. virtual) by going into their profile on runsignup.com and choosing "Manage Registration" next to the race (options are then at the top of the page)
