COVID-19 Race Updates (last update: 8 July 2020)

New Virtual 5K/10K Events Options

We have added Virtual 5K and 10K race events! The virtual events follow the same course as their respective in-person events, however, they are separate from the in-person 5K/10K event options and will be open for participation from Sept. 10 thru Oct. 10. Our virtual events are "RaceJoy Ready" and participants are encouraged to download and use the RaceJoy App on their iPhone or Android for automatic tracking and posting of results. See the RaceJoy section below for more information.

In-Person Race Status

As of today (8 July 2020), we still intend to host the in-person race on October 10, 2020. However, we are still awaiting final approval from the park.

If we host an in-person race we will follow all CDC guidelines as well as the following for your safety:

  • The race will be capped based on park recommendations
  • No Water on course, must have your own water for the race
  • Staggered start times and corral assignments will be emailed prior to the race
  • Will receive a designated start time, you must start during this time no exceptions
  • Can only arrive a maximum 15 minutes prior to you assigned start time to pick up bib
  • When arriving at start line must be ready to run, no warming up  or socializing in this area
  • Plexiglass or self-serve bib pick up
  • 6 foot distancing markers at packet pickup and restrooms
  • Post-race food (if available) will be pre-packaged only
  • Post-race results will be online only, emailed or text in real-time, no printed results
  • Awards will be mailed to award winners
  • Hand sanitizer will be readily available
  • During packet pickup you must wear a mask, you do not need to run with a mask
  • Encouraged to cover nose and mouth when passing runners or hikers on course
  • No onsite registrations

The goal of the event is to provide a truly competitive racing experience for the participants while adhering to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines.

The race will have a time-trial type set up which will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants (family member or participants that live together) during designated times between 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM. While registering, participants will be asked to select a 10 minute starting time slot.  Participants may begin their race anytime during the selected time slot.  There is a limit of 14 starting positions available for each starting time slot and they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  In order to maintain safe distancing and traffic control on the race course participants must start during their selected starting time slot.  If a particular starting time is not available it means it has reached the maximum number of participants for that time slot.  Please do not ask us to make any exceptions, because we will not.  The race course will remain open until 12:00 PM.

Each participant’s start time will be recorded as they cross the starting line. As participants finish, they will receive a text message and/or email with their finishing time.  A list of overall finish times and places for all competitors will be continually updated on RunSignup while the race is in progress. Shortly after the race concludes, the final race results along with the Overall and Age Group awards will be posted.  Award will be mailed to the winners or can be arranged to be picked up from the race director.

Registration and packet pick up:

THERE WILL BE NO ON-SITE REGISTRATION.  ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST PRE-REGISTER ONLINE BEFORE 6:00 AM RACE MORNING.

THE RACE WILL HAVE A CAP OF 200 PARTICIPANTS

Onsite packet pick up will be available on race morning beginning at TBD

Participants are asked to not arrive at the race site any earlier than 15 minutes before their designated starting time.

Additionally, all participants must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Participants are required to be completely self-sufficient.  That means, no water stops, refreshments, or medical assistance will be provided.
  • Participants must follow all CDC safe distancing guidelines.
  • Participants must be in good health and symptom-free from any illness for at least 2 weeks prior to the event.
  • After picking up their race number and upon approaching the starting line participants are required to immediately begin their race.
  • Participants will not be allowed to congregate or conduct any race preparation (warm-ups, stretching, adjusting, or changing apparel, etc.) in the starting area. Participants should approach the starting line ready to run.

Except for passing, participants should always maintain a minimum separation of 10 feet behind or in front of each other. Only pass another competitor when able to maintain a minimum separation of 6 feet when passing other competitors at any time.  Participants may pass only when there are not any oncoming runners approaching from the opposite direction and when social distancing can be maintained. Before passing, participants must be sure they can safely remain 10 feet behind and then 10 feet in front of the participant being overtaken. If you hear "on your left" or see that you have a competitor trailing you that you are not pulling away from, please allow the participant to pass after finding an area along the side of the trail with adequate clearance to maintain social distancing. If you are attempting to pass another person, please give verbal notification that you'd like to pass "on your left" and give that person time to find adequate space along the side of the trail to maintain social distancing before passing. In short, please anticipate that you may have to slow down and/or stop to accommodate other competitors or fellow citizens on the relatively narrow trail. Being kind and compassionate to each other and respecting each others boundaries during these stressful times (and always) is infinitely more important than your finish time.

Upon completing their run and crossing the finish line, participants should continue moving away from the finish area. Participants will be required to leave the finish line area and proceed immediately to their vehicle as soon as they complete their race. No congregating of any type will be permitted either before, during, or after the event.

Failure to adhere to any of the stated race requirements will result in the immediate disqualification of the participant.

Please keep in mind that your cooperation and adherence to all safe distancing practices is the key to us being able to offer competitive events like this in the foreseeable future.

Registration for the virtual 5K/10K includes all processing fees, gender-specific tech tee, finishers medal, and shipping costs. It does NOT cover the entry fee to the park since your participation will be at your own date and time. (Please don't register for a virtual event with the intention of participating during the in-person event!)

 

FAQ

Q. Where does the race start?

A. Race HQ and the Start/Finish line are located at Buck Pavillion.

 

Q. What trail does the course follow?
A. The course will follow the Lake Shore Trail around Clopper Lake.
 

Q. Can I run with a stroller?

A. No, not unless your stroller is self-driving and is equipped with all-terrain tires 😄. In all seriousness though, the trail is simply not suitable for strollers.

 

Q. Can I run with my dog?

A. Unfortunately, not this year. We love trail running with our Chocolate Lab and wish we could allow it, however, in the interest of safety, we've decided we can't allow participants with dogs this year.

 

Q. Can I change the distance I register for?

A. Yes, but you must email us by OCTOBER 8 to make any changes. We will not accept any distance changes after October 8. We will NOT allow changes on Race Day morning!

 

Q. Are you offering T-Shirts?

A. YES! You must register by September 22, 2020, to get a shirt

 

Q. What are the cut off times?

A. TBA

 

Q. What's the course like?

A. You will run on a natural trail, with rocks, roots, some hills, and bridges (no stream crossings).

 

Q. Is there a finishers' medal?

A. YOU BET!

 

Q. I'm new to trail running, is this a good race for noobs?

A. YOU BET! The loop around Clopper Lake is the perfect balance of distance, climb, and off-road terrain for new trail runners and expert trailblazers alike. We suggest starting with the 5K (1 Loop) if this is your first trail race.

 

Disclaimer: distances may be a bit longer due to the trail we are using. Don’t worry though, we will ensure the results reflect the correct distance you run.
