Our Fundraising Recipients
The Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund was established in 1999 by Jeff and Patty Hurwitz, after Patty’s diagnosis of breast cancer. Because there was no comprehensive breast center in Frederick at that time, Patty had to travel to a major metropolitan area for her care and treatment. She and Jeff wanted to start a fund to bring the very best breast cancer treatment to Frederick residents. Believing that early diagnosis was the key to Patty’s successful outcome, the goal of the fund has been to provide the most innovative options in early detection and treatment of breast cancer to the Frederick community.
The Male Breast Cancer Global Alliance brings men with breast cancer together with researchers, clinicians and oncologists around the world for the purpose of advancing research, clinical trials and treatments for men diagnosed with breast cancer. Our mission is to advocate for all men diagnosed with breast cancer to ensure they receive equal access to support and treatment; to serve as a source of support and resources for the men, their care partners, and their families; to ensure that men are appropriately represented in research and clinical trials, and to recruit volunteer “ambassadors” to increase awareness of breast cancer in men on a global scale.
How are Proceeds Distributed?
100% of the proceeds will be distributed to our partners! Much of the race cost has been funded by private donations which enables us to donate more to the charaties!
Meet Our Race Founder
Mark was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in September of 2024 after discovering a lump under his right nipple. After a mammogram indicated a suspicious lump, a biopsy was scheduled and revealed what would be determined to be a Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Mark underwent a mastectomy on September 30th, a date he will remember for the rest of his life.
Mark was lucky. His cancer was caught early and treatment was undertaken quickly. While only 1 in 800 men will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime, the disease has a higher mortality rate then Breast Cancer in women. One of the biggest reasons? Men are not aware that they can get Breast Cancer, so they do not do self-exams and if they do notice a lump, they delay seeking medical attention quickly.
This is what has motivated Mark to do what he can to raise awareness of Male Breast Cancer, and this 5K is how he is trying to do just that!!
