Description
Participants adopt a floating rubber turtle to race down a water chute in the Cunningham Falls State Park's Manor Area. Turtle numbers are randomly assigned to participants on the day of the event. Multiple heats may be ran with the top five turtles from each heat advancing to a final round to determine prize winners. A participant may be listed in multiple heats depending on the number of turtles purchased by that participant. Heat winners will be assigned a new number in the final heat.
Cash prizes for the owners of the top 4 fastest turtles: $500, $250, $100, $50. (Must be an adult to receive an award.)
The event begins on Saturday, April 20 at 12 noon.
The Friends of Cunningham Falls and Gambrill State Parks, Inc. are raising funds to support the Cunningham Falls Park Aviary located in the Manor Area. The Aviary is home to 17 animals including owls, snakes, turtles and a bald eagle that are unable to live in the wild due to injury or human dependency such as former pets. These animal ambassadors are now part of the park's program to educate park visitors and members of the surrounding community about the natural world and our role in it.
You can join the effort to provide a high standard of care for these magnificent wildlife ambassadors in a unique and entertaining way by sponsoring the floating turtles and watching them go. Participants need not be present in order to win. You can also use the "Donate to the Aviary animals" icon to donate without participating.
