Dear Marathon Participants, Volunteers & Sponsors,

The City of Caribou was excited for the opportunities that 2020 would bring -
especially the celebration of one major milestone: the 5th anniversary of the
Caribou Marathon. However, enter COVID-19, and the unavoidable event
restrictions, strain on local businesses, and threats to the health and wellbeing
of our most vulnerable citizens, and we are forced to pause and re-think our
community priorities. It is with genuine sadness that we must announce the
cancellation of the 2020 Caribou Marathon.

For us, this decision was not an easy one. We held out for as long as we
could, in hopes that the tide would turn, but we fear the logistics of holding the
2020 race are just too daunting at this time. Runner registrations are down,
travel restrictions and event gathering limitations are in place and we do not
feel comfortable seeking monetary sponsorships from businesses who are
trying to get back on track. Our team, including Caribou Parks & Recreation,
SUB5 Racing, CompetitorME and Platinum Sponsors Cary Medical Center &
Pines Health Services, feel that we can not safely host a 2020 race that will
meet the professional standard that you have come to expect from Caribou.
Furthermore, safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the community, staff,
volunteers, sponsors and runners will always remain our top priority.

Now for some GOOD news! We are pleased to say that the race will be bigger
and better than ever on September 18 & 19, 2021, with some unique surprises
for us all to look forward to!

Runners who are currently registered for the 2020 Caribou Marathon will
receive an email from CompetitorME and RunSignup detailing deferment
or refund options. Runners who choose to roll their registration over to
the 2021 Marathon will receive free entry into the NEW 5K planned to
coincide with the Kids Race on September 18, 2021. The 5K will also
feature unique swag, live music, food and fun in Downtown Caribou. If
you prefer a refund, we will be happy to grant your request.

This event has quickly become one of our favorites. Not seeing you in
September will be very difficult for us all. Please keep running, keep
challenging yourself, keep training and keep Caribou in your heart. We will see
you again in 2021!
