The 17th Annual Safe Passage/Camino Seguro 5K will again be held in September this year, from the 10th to 19th. We are building on the incredible success of the 2020 event which was postponed from May and was held “virtually” because of COVID-19. The virtual event was amazing! We had over 250 runners or walkers spread around the US (15 states) and around the globe (6 countries)! Going virtual meant people could participate even if they weren’t in the vicinity of Cumberland, Maine or even on this continent. We surpassed our fundraising goal by over 60%!
$20,000 will make a huge impact towards costs to support our new middle school!
Check out the video from last year's event: Safe Passage 2020 5K
We are keeping the virtual element for 2021 and encourage people to join us by running or walking during a 10 day period this September. If health conditions permit, we may add a small, in-person gathering in Cumberland on Sunday, September 19th. Our goal will again be $20,000 (a target we hope to exceed).
Safe Passage was founded by Hanley Denning, a Yarmouth resident (and alum of Greely High School and Bowdoin College), to provide education, health and enrichment programs to students and families living in extreme poverty in the community of the Guatemala City garbage dump. It has since expanded into a full-day school and currently serves over 500 students and 319 families annually.

We are happy to announce that everyone will again get a t-shirt this year. If you register by August 9th, your tee will be mailed by September 6th. Every registration requires a home address and a t-shirt size. We will either hand deliver t-shirts to local participants or ship to those runners who live out of the area. Registrants after August 9th will receive t-shirts shortly after the event is complete.
We would love to see YOUR photos and video from the race! Please share either by emailing them to firstname.lastname@example.org or click on the "more" tab at the top of the page, then click "photos" and select the correct race year.
By September 6th: T-shirts will be shipped for all runners who registered by August 9th.
*We will do our best to have t-shirts delivered to runners that registered early before the race. However, if you live outside of the U.S. shirts may not arrive until after the race (regardless of registration date). Our apologies for the inconvenience.
September 10th to September 19th: Run Your Race, Your Way!
September 10th to September 19th: Record your race time on results page of RunSignup.Com.
*We would love to see photos from your run! To submit photos or selfies, sign into your RunSignUp account, open the race page, and click on “More – Photos” at the top. Then you can click on your photo album to upload and share your race photos! Having trouble or have questions? Email us at email@example.com and we are happy to help!
September 19th: Virtual 5K Race Wrap-up - Join us on Facebook Live as we thank supporters, announce fundraiser prizes and for the final tally of funds raised!!
Late September: T-shirts will be delivered for all runners who registered after September 9th or who live outside of the U.S.
All participants and visitors are encouraged to raise funds to benefit Safe Passage (Camino Seguro) programs in Guatemala City.
Our goal again this year is to raise $20,000 in support of our middle school. Funds will help offset the costs of science and technology improvements which is an integral part of our middle school curriculum. We did it last year - let's make it happen again (and more)!
