Description

The Norway Triathlon is a United States Triathlon (USAT)-sanctioned sprint triathlon that combines swimming, bicycle riding, and running.

Competitors begin with a 750-meter swim on a triangular course from Norway’s Pennesseewassee Park beach area near Route 118. Upon returning to the beach, swimmers will run to the transition area and mount their bikes for a 12.4-mile (20 km) ride up Route 118, taking a right turn on Greenwood Road to a turnaround point beyond Richardson Hollow Road. Once back at the transition area the final leg begins; a 3.1-mile (5 km) run through the paved roads of the Ashton neighborhood. The run continues back to Pennesseewassee Park for the finish line. Individual competitors undertake all three legs. Relay teams may be formed with 2 or 3 competitors. Racers of all abilities are encouraged to compete.

All proceeds benefit the Western Foothills Land Trust (WFLT). WFLT protects over 8,000 acres of land in the greater Oxford Hills via fee-owned lands and conservation easements with private landowners. The Trust manages over 34 miles of recreational trails for public use at seven of their preserves.  Shepard’s Farm Preserve and Roberts Farm Preserves are very close to the Triathlon site in Norway, both featuring sculptures of the late Maine artist Bernard Langlais. Roberts Farm Preserve has 18k of grassed and groomed Nordic trails and a warming hut open during the winter.  Shepard’s Farm offers 3 miles of mountain bike/hiking/running trails and is perfect for kite flying and sledding.  It also includes a half-mile ADA-accessible loop trail suitable for all abilities.
