Description
The idea for this run/walk originated after our Dearborn Police family lost Sgt. Christopher Hampton on November 25th, 2020 to suicide during his tour of duty. Chris was a wonderful human being, a caring friend, a loving brother / son / father, and an amazing Police Officer. The 2021 inaugural event was a great success in majority due to the wonderful support we received from the participants, volunteers, business partners, and partnership with Trivium Racing. The reason for continuing this annual event will be to keep the memory and legacy of Sgt. Chris Hampton alive and using our collective family’s loss to help others by raising awareness for those suffering from anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Those issues regularly plague first responders and effect persons of all backgrounds. Organizations such as the Dearborn Police Officers Charity work to provide support and tools to recognize/assist persons in need.
2023 was the 3rd annual event and the biggest and best so far. We have had lot of fun with our themes at the last two events- Robo Cop and Back to the Future- and can't wait to remember Chris by choosing yet another one of his favorite movies for 2024. We have officially selected Ghostbusters as the theme for 2024 and we are super pumped that the date this year falls so close to Halloween!
Returning for 2024 is our incredible empowering sponsor and ally in the fight against the stigma of mental illness, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Team shares our mission to end the stigma by supporting events just like this. They offer amazing services and helped us in establishing connections with incredible like-minded people such as former Detroit Lions Quarterback and Mental Health Advocate, Eric Hipple. We could not ask for a better partner and look forward to carrying this torch with them for many years to come.
Our goal as this 5k continues to grow will be to reach new participants and offer support to a variety of amazing organizations such as Call for Backup and National Alliance on Mental Illness, and this year's beneficiary, Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors, who all work toward a common goal of awareness and assistance for those in need. Whether you have struggled with mental health yourself, are a suicide survivor, wish to support mental health awareness in first responders, or just want to come out a test your athletic abilities, we welcome you to our fun event.
