Duathlon: Run 5k, bike 20k, Run 5k

Over a year in the making, we set our sights on this venue months before last year’s 3D DU, which was the final year at Willow Metropark. For the new venue, we wanted a historic, unique location, one with a lot of history and character. The choice was obvious, and close to the warehouse, so we were able to spend a lot of time at this venue. In the process we found some great spots to eat as well as filled the kitchen with farmers market items.
With a celebrated, iconic, historic and well run event in place already like the Crim, we had a solid foundation to work with right from the start. So the first meeting in the fall of 2014 with interested parties went perfectly. The challenge was coming up with something unique that embraced all the changes and improvements the city has experienced and continues to experience. With one of the state’s best Farmers Markets, the MSU and U of M satellite campuses, as well as Mott and Kettering, we had a ton to work with.
Then we had the history of GM, the river itself, and the millions of dollars going into the new greenscape and park along the river. Well, we put it all down on paper with the focal point being the iconic arch and brick-street downtown. But how to incorporate all the city has to offer into a fast flowing event?
Well folks, as many of you know we have designed 100’s upon 100’s of courses all over the United States – taking a blank canvas and making outdoor endurance art. Kenny, Annmarie and Eric were all smiles one fall night in 2015 after running the course together, and driving the bike course a final time. THIS WAS IT! We were all happy with the outcome, and Annmarie said, “Wow I want to race this one myself.” Eric followed with Kenny saying, “I think this is one of our best works yet, it is just awesome and incorporates ALL Flint has to offer.” The three of us agreed this is not only a super fun course, but it flows so well that everyone, both the serious and the casual athlete, will thoroughly enjoy this awesome course.
After the race you are just steps away from an incredible experience at the Farmers Market. And some pretty great dining choices on the bricks on Saginaw.

Course Info

While this course is fast, make no mistake, we made sure to include the few hills you’ll find in and around Flint. Gotta keep everybody honest out there, on the run and the bike.
The run course shoots you downhill right out of the gate to a beautiful trail along the river; so you have a good 4 blocks to get things sorted out before a 6’ wide trail takes over the next 2 miles. This is going to wind you along the river, past Kettering, and back downtown before you jump off the river trail and onto the bricks, uphill to the finish line.
The Bike course takes you through the MSU and U of M campuses, through the art district, past historic Mott properties, then up through Mott College before a short section on the bricks before flying past the newly remodeled theater to a FLOW THRU Transition for each lap on the bike. Awesome!
