Dear Barron Lake Triathletes
First off, we at TriMichiana and Racing for Steve-O hope that you and your family are staying safe during this time. While we have all been affected by COVID-19, some individuals have felt the impact more than others. We consider each of you to be a part of our racing family and want you to know that we are sending our prayers and best wishes during this time. It is with much sadness that we are announcing the cancelation of the 2020 Barron Lake Triathlon. Don’t fret – we will be back in action for this event in August of 2021!
We considered many factors before making this decision but with the State of Michigan expanding their restriction dates and further limiting outdoor gatherings we felt that our only option was to cancel the event.
We want to extend a huge thank you to each of you for faithfully participating in our events and supporting health and wellness within our community.
Participants already registered for the 2020 Race:
We will begin processing refunds on July 24, 2020. If you would like to defer your registration to 2021 or donate all or part of your entry fee to the Racing For Steve-O Foundation, please email email@example.com before July 24. All registered participants that have not arranged for a deferral or a donation by July 24 will receive a refund of their registration fee.

Racing For Steve-O Foundation online auction is still in the works and we will be sending out an email link for that the week of August 16th. Anyone who would like to donate an item or gift certificate can do so by contacting our auction coordinator at StaceyVanputten@hotmail.com by August 7th.

Dear Barron Lake Triathlon Racers and Volunteers,
It is with great joy that we are announcing that we are continuing with planning for Barron
Lake Triathlon on August 22nd, 2020! Due to ongoing changes with Covid-19, predicted
Michigan outdoor crowd restrictions of 250 people and new USAT guidelines, there will
definitely be some big changes this year. We anticipate an excellent event with safeguards to
help keep everyone safe. Don't let this opportunity slip by!!
Here are the changes we are working on:
1) In order to allow for the safest event possible in our small venue, we are limiting our
available race slots to 150 racers and 75 volunteers. No spectators will be allowed in the gated
venue area and surrounding residential neighborhood. Out of respect for the neighboring
community, we request that only racers attend the event. Being respectful to the neighboring
community will help ensure that we will be able to continue to hold this event in Niles in the

Even if you haven't had much chance to train this year, this is do-able!! The roads along the
bike course are in excellent shape (best ever!) Bike turn around will be BEFORE the giant hill
on Anderson and White.
3) Due to spacing restrictions, we, unfortunately, can't have a Kids Triathlon. Older children who
are strong open water swimmers who can safely stay out of the way of traffic and can
independently set up/take down transition may consider participating in the Sprint race.
Parents will not be allowed inside the venue area unless they are racing. Contact
info@TriMichiana.com with questions regarding whether or not your child can participate in the
4) Due to crowd and distancing restrictions, we cannot allow relay teams this year.
5) The award ceremony will be replaced with award pick-ups, an email blast the day after the
race, and acknowledgments on our social media pages. You will be honored for your victory
Overall and age group awards can be picked up at a table near registration or will be available
at SpinZone in Granger after race day.
6) USAT will not allow water stations along the course. Traditionally racers bring their own
water for the bike course. We highly encourage racers to carry water with them for the run
portion. Optional running belts and handheld water carriers can be found at Fleet Feet Sports
(Mishawaka), SpinZone (Granger), and ProForm (South Bend). Be sure to bring your own
water, we will not be able to supply that for your race.
7) Our annual auction will be an online auction only. Please stay tuned for an email link for
8) We will be following all USAT guidelines to keep everyone as safe as possible from
contracting Covid-19. This includes the following:
Physical distancing of 6 ft.
More time between swim waves to space out racers
Pre-assigned, larger spacing distance on bike racks that rotate between age
grouper/swim waves. Example: 1 person per swim wave on each rack, rotating
between waves to space racers on bike racks.
Screening racers and volunteers as they arrive for symptoms and exposure to Covid-19.
Encouraging racers to wear a mask or face coverings that they can pull up over their
face before & after racing and while passing another racer. Volunteers will be required
to wear a mask.
We encourage all racers to stay home on race day if they are not feeling well. If you are
not well on race day, we can defer your entry to next year.
9) As restrictions are lifted and guidelines are changing, we will adjust to fit those
guidelines. Full details will be available on our website and will be emailed to racers prior to
10) We highly recommend if you are interested in racing that you register by August 8th
or sooner. We anticipate the event will sell out this year. In the event we need to cancel
as a result of the ongoing changes with Covid-19, refunds will be offered (minus $4.50
runsignup.com transaction fee), OR your entry can be deferred to next year or you can choose
to donate the fee to Racing For Steve-O Foundation.
USAT is offering refunds or deferring to next year for all one-day membership passes in the
event that the race is canceled.
Your entry fee covers the cost of the expenses for putting on this event. It cost around
$10,000- $13,000 to put on this event every year. Our charity, Racing For Steve-O Foundation,
typically only earns funds from sponsorships, auction, online fundraisers, and our VIP parking.
At this time, our greatest concern is losing funds for our charity due to the drastic decrease in
donations and sponsorships this year due to Covid-19 and the current economic situation. We
are continuing this event with the knowledge that our charity may only break even this year.
This race means so much to us and we know everyone is excited to finally be able to race
again! This is why we've decided to continue with the event. We are a grassroots organization
that is run 100% by volunteers. Donations are always greatly appreciated!
