You can pick up your race packet (which includes your shirt and, if you’re signed up for the 5K, your bib number) on Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the grand ballroom at The Elms Hotel & Spa. (Actually, if you’re getting off work earlier and want to stop by, we may be ready for you.)
You may also pick up your race packet from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning in the ballroom.
Arrive early, both Friday and Saturday, so you have time to enjoy the art show organized by Main Spring Arts Gallery. The show, which features the work of local artists, will also be in the ballroom. The show will continue until the event finishes on Saturday morning.
On Saturday morning, take advantage of the 10% discount being offered at the coffee shop, Cafe at the Elms. While you’re there, be sure to thank The Elms for being a longtime sponsor!
Online registration is available through Friday, and late registration will be available on Saturday morning before the race (although it’s too late to receive a shirt).
Speaking of shirts ... we were unable to obtain the soft cotton t-shirts, so we are providing short-sleeve, sweat-wicking technical shirts instead. We think you’ll be pleased.
Parking is available across the street in the Wabash BBQ parking lot. Additional parking is available if that lot is full, just follow the instructions of our expert parking attendants. Please don’t park in The Elms Hotel’s parking lot.
Feeling a little sore after the race? Need to get loosened up before you go out to walk two miles? Precision Chiropractic will be there to help! Dr. Justin Cook will be set up in the ballroom.
We don’t want our walkers to get trampled by a bunch of over-zealous 5K racers, so we will let the runners line up first. After they take off at a safe distance away, the walkers will start.
Kids Fun Run
The 1-mile Kids Fun Run will begin at 8:45. All finishers will receive a certificate for an ice cream cone at Dari-B.
An awards ceremony will be held at approximately 9 a.m. in the ballroom to present prizes to the first-place overall finishers as well as the first-place finishers in each age group category.
What a mash-up! Artists & athletes will mix and mingle in a one-of-a-kind event to benefit The Good Samaritan Center on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Hundreds of artists and athletes will gather at the starting line in front of Wabash Barbecue in Excelsior Springs, Mo. When the air horn blasts at 8 a.m., some will race along a scenic 5K course that includes a loop around Lake Maurer (with chip timing and prizes for the winners). Some will stroll more casually and enjoy a two-mile walk. And the kids will take off on their own one-mile fun run.
Beyond the race and running, this year’s Tortoise & Hare will feature:
Every participant (in each event) will receive a high-quality, soft cotton t-shirt that features the original work of local artist and avid runner Holly Spencer. (Registration deadline to receive shirts is March 22, 2019.) PLEASE NOTE: When you register, you will be asked to select a t-shirt size. Please be aware that women’s sizes may be smaller than the unisex sizes.
Every participant in the chip-timed 5K event will receive a unique acrylic medal, custom designed by well-known local artist Molly Roberts.
Main Spring Art Gallery is organizing an art show during Friday night’s early packet pickup and Saturday morning’s race. Enjoy the displays from area artists in the Elms Carriage House (across the street from Wabash Barbecue). Beatz DJ Service will provide music and DJ services for the event.
This blending of artists and athletes creates a unique event, which will draw folks throughout the Northland and beyond to Excelsior Springs. More importantly, the event will support the work of The Good Samaritan Center. For more than 30 years, the Good Samaritan Center has been dedicated to preventing homelessness and hunger by providing basic life needs and access to life skills for residents in northern Clay County (including Excelsior Springs, Lawson, Kearney and Smithville) and throughout Ray County.
First-place overall finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions will each receive a $100 gift card from The Running Well Store. Watch this space as we announce more sponsors and prizes in the days ahead!
A SPECIAL RATE of only $10 is available (just enter the coupon code STUDENT). After the 5K run and walk, there will be a 1-mile fun run for the kids.
HAVE MORE FUN WITH A TEAM of your best friends or co-workers! Create a team of five, and each participant will receive a $6 discount (only $24 -- like signing up 4 and getting the 5th member free). You might even want to get artistic and design some team t-shirts for your group. Team leaders have the option to create a team and register all of the members together, or to allow team members to register individually after the team has been created.
Be sure to register before March 22, 2019, to guarantee a shirt (for all participants) and medal (for 5K participants). Late registrations after March 23 won’t be guaranteed to receive either a shirt or medal.

The Fishing River Running Club is a group for everyone, non-runners and novice runners and avid athletes, in the Excelsior Springs area. We meet at Dubious Claims to run together every Wednesday at 6 p.m. (Sometimes we get together other nights, or weekends, to run — join our Facebook page to stay in the loop.) Our mission is to build a network within the Excelsior Springs community where runners can train with others and provide a forum to discuss running techniques, goals and accomplishments. Have fun, get fit, and make new friends!
