Charity Partner
The Boulevard 10K has named the Brave Like Gabe Foundation as the official charity partner of the race.
Brave Like Gabe” started as a hashtag to support professional runner Gabriele “Gabe” Grunewald as she sought treatment for her third battle with an incurable rare salivary gland cancer - Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma - in 2017.
As a professional runner and rare cancer advocate, Gabe founded The Brave Like Gabe Foundation to share her story, inspire others to connect and do the same, and to make a difference in the cancer community. Gabe passed away in June 2019 at the age of 32 and her legacy with the foundation continues to inspire others to share their own struggles while also helping to find better, more effective treatments for rare cancer.
Kristen Windscheffel, Kansan runner, mom, wife and daughter, passed away in January 2024 at the age of 39 from the same cancer Gabe had. Kristen also felt as though running and meditation were her medicine during her cancer journey, and often participated in races in Kansas City. On behalf of both Kristen and Gabe, the Boulevard 10K has named the Brave Like Gabe Foundation as the official charity partner of the race, which happens to fall on the same week Kristen would have turned 40 years old. Like Gabe, Kristen and her family also experienced the frustrations and challenges associated with the need for more clinical research for treatment of ACC. All money raised will benefit Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma research!
