Description

Groundhog Run benefiting the children of Ability KC has raised more than $4.75 million for children with special needs since its inception in 1982. The race is one of very few 5K races, and believed to be the only 100% underground sanctioned 10K race in the nation. With a consistent temperature of 65 to 68 degrees, the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis is the ideal venue for runners from all over the country to compete in this annual winter event.

Annually, more than 2700 individuals and families receive services for medical rehabilitation, therapeutic preschool, and employment services at Ability KC. In addition, multiple specialty programs and services are offered, such as neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), corporate partnerships for employment opportunities and much more. Ability KC is proud to celebrate more than 70 years since the beginnings of each agency in 1947. Thousands of lives have been changed and celebrations of successes have occurred due to the generosity of the Kansas City community.

VIP 5K and 10K

A limited number of VIP level entries will be available for both races. VIP entries include runner registration fees for the 5K or 10K, VIP suite access on race day and VIP parking. The VIP suite gives guests access to an even better assortment of food and beverages, as well as access to real restrooms...avoid the port-a-potties! Your suite wristband and VIP parking pass will be available at packet pickup Friday and Saturday before the race. If you are unable to pick up your packet at packet pickup please contact the race director for instructions.

Parking

Parking will be available at Ameristar casino across the street from the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis. Shuttle buses will be available at Ameristar to take runners across the highway to the SupTropolis. We advise arriving to the event early as traffic is usually heavy the morning of the event. 

Gear Check

Gear check will be available for all Groundhog Run participants from 7 AM to 12 PM on race day. All items MUST be picked up by noon. Gear check is only available for race participants and runners must present their bibs for drop-off and pick-up as items will be organized by bib number. Runners must use the bag provided at packet pick-up and all items must fit inside the bag. Hunt Midwest, Ability KC and Groundhog Run volunteers are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please do not leave valuable or irreplaceable items in your bag. Race organizers reserve the right to search any bag. 

FAQ

Q. Are strollers allowed on the course?
A.  Due to insurance stipulations we do not allow strollers on the course for the safety of all participants and your child. 

Q. Where should I park on race day?
A. Parking will be available in the Ameristar parking lot, which is located directly across 210 Highway from the entrance of Hunt Midwest. Parking volunteers will be outside directing you on race day. 

Q. Where does the course go? 
A. The course is underground in the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis business park.  A detailed race map will be posted prior to the race and will be available for viewiing at packet pickup. 

Q. Can I pick up my packet on race day? 
A. Pick-up prior to race day is preferred, but race day packet pickup will be available at the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Q. How old do you have to be to participate in Groundhog Run?
A.  All participants must be at least 8 years old  to register for Groundhog Run. 

Q.  Can I switch from the 5K to the 10K or vise - versa?
A. You may switch from one race to another at packet pickup Jan. 27 or 28. There will be a charge of $5 to switch from the 5K to the 10K due at the time of switch.  Refunds will not be made to switch from the 10K to the5K. 

Q. Can I walk the 5K or 10K? 
A.  Walkers are welcome to register for the 5K Red Wave but are discouraged from signing up for the 10K.

Q. What if there is bad weather? 
A. The race will take place snow or shine, as the weather doesn't affect the course. The course will stay in the mid 60s no matter what the temperature is outside. Please use your best judgement and be cautious if driving conditions are poor. 

Q. Can I bring my dog and /or wear rollerblades? 
A.  Due to the nature of the course and insurance stipulations we do not allow dogs or rollerblades on the course. 

Q. I registered but cannot participate; can I transfer my registration to next year or give it to a friend? 
A. As stated in the waiver, your registration cannot transfer to next year and no runner substitutions are allowed. 

Q. I registered by cannot participate; can I still pick-up my packet? 
A. Yes, you may still pick up your packet if you are unable to participate. The race sells out every year, so if you are unable to run, please let us know ASAP so we can open your spot to someone else. 

Waiver

As a condition for participation in this event, the undersigned, intending to be legally bound hereby, for myself, my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, waives, releases, discharges and covenants NOT TO SUE the following: (1) KC Running Company, Hunt Midwest Enterprises, Inc., Hunt Midwest Real Estate Development, Inc., Ability KC, or its Managing Board, and all sponsors, and any of their subsidiaries, associated companies, agents, or employees; and (2) race officials and volunteers, and any of their representatives, successors or assigns (the “Released Parties”). This waiver, release, discharge, and covenant encompasses any and all claims of liability for death or damage and for any and all injuries to me or my property arising out of or in connection with this event (the “Release and Waiver”). The Release and Waiver extends to all claims of any kind or nature, whether foreseen or unforeseen, known or unknown, against any Released Party.

No refunds or runner substitutions will be allowed. Race officials have the authority to remove anyone from the race, including, but not limited to, those using the following: baby strollers of any kind (including jogging or running strollers) or rollerblades. Also, runners are not allowed to be accompanied by dogs and/or using or possessing alcoholic beverages or other controlled substances. Your canceled check or credit card statement will serve as your proof of registration. If a participant is switching from 5K to 10K, the additional $5 charge will be due at packet pickup. All participants must be 8 years of age or older on the day of the event. Finally, by accepting this waiver you authorize the use of photographs or video taken during the event in promotional materials.
