March to Montgomery Tribute Challenge

Mon March 1 - Sun April 11

Mileage Questions

Q: Why is the March to Montgomery Tribute Challenge 54 miles?
A: In March of 1965 there were three separate marches that started in Selma on U.S. Highway 80 with the end goal of reaching the State Capitol Building in Montgomery. U.S. Highway 80 is 54 miles from beginning to end and so this number is the most commonly used when discussing the marches. It should be noted however that the actual route was 51 miles. Thus when submitting your mileage in this challenge the first 3 miles simply keep you in the vicinity of the start before heading out onto the highway.

Q: What modes of transportation are allowed?
A: All modes of transportation are allowed with two caveats. The first is that all movement must be self-powered. Secondly, there are two categories; run/walk and anything goes. If you signup for run/walk, you can only run or walk to get your miles and if you choose the last category you can choose whichever self-powered method you'd like!

Q: Do I need a GPS watch/tracker, or Strava? Will I need to show my watch or device for proof of running?
A: You can use one if you wish but it's not required. Strava has a free app and you can join our club to join others to track the progress of everyone and keep everyone motivated.

Q: Do treadmill miles count? What about Trail miles?
A: Treadmills or trails, roads or tracks, hilly or flat, rain or shine, miles are miles! All miles count!

Q: I'm running in another race during the same period as the March to Montgomery Tribute Challenge, can I count those miles towards the challenge?
A: This is perfectly acceptable.

Q: Can I backdate my mileage?
A: Yes. We understand people may have not signed up before March 1st. You can backdate any miles back to March 1st, please be honest!

Q: How will I report my miles?
A: Refer to the "Tracking Mileage" section for full details.
