FAQ
What is the deadline to register?
The last day to register is September 22nd, 2023. The Challenge starts Monday, June 26th, 2023 and it may be difficult to complete the journey if you start after this date.
How does this virtual challenge work?
Beginning June 26th, you'll have 19 weeks to walk, jog, run, bike, hike, swim, paddle or row as far as you can. You can set a goal for yourself and you will log your mileage through the "results" section at the top of this website. Each person on your team will contribute to the miles walked- your goal is to walk the miles between the major Mayo Clinic Health System and Mayo Clinic sites totaling about 3,808 miles. Since this is a VIRTUAL event, you can complete your mileage anywhere and anytime that is most convenient for you during the challenge period.
Please note the challenge ends November 5th and all activity results must be submitted by November 10th, 2023.
What's in it for me?
This challenge is a great way to have fun, stay engaged while you train for one of the Heritage Classic 5K Run/Walk events. There are no physical prizes, but you will earn the reward of staying physically active, make your training a little more fun and hopefully some positive competition between teams. Your team could also earn bragging rights if you can complete the distance of the challenge!
What if I don't have a team?
We have set up several teams that anyone can join. When registering, pick the team you resonate with the most.
How do I keep track of my mileage?
Ideally you use a GPS watch or mobile phone application to track your activities distance (tracking time is an option). If you do not have a device to be able to track mileage, you can plot your walk, run, or bike ride on a website (Google Maps and Map My Run are just a couple of examples). You are also able to make some time-to-mileage conversions, see below for some estimates you can use.
Conversion to Miles
Note: the conversions below are based on a moderate pace, not a leisurely pace.
2,000 steps= 1 mile
20 minutes of walking= 1 mile
10 minutes of biking= 1 mile
32 minutes of swimming= 1 mile
13 minutes of rowing or kayaking= 1 mile
