A Rush for the Brush 5k

This race is being hosted by Delta Delta Sigma, the Pre-Dental Honors Society here at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. We are a club of undergraduate college students who are aspiring to become dentists as well as serve the world around us. Due to the fact that we are not licensed dentists yet, we can only change the smiles of the world so much. Through this race, you can help us sponsor that kind of change here in our beautiful state. 

 Our 5k is going to be a fundraiser for an organization called the North Carolina Missions of Mercy (NCMOM). They are a unit of people who host clinics all across our state and solely rely on volunteers to provide dental care for people that cannot afford it. Being pre-dental students, each clinic is a great opportunity to be a part of. Until 2013-2014, there were so many clinics that it was almost impossible to attend all of them since travelling is usually involved. Unfortunately, the economy and funding cuts finally kicked in and now there significantly less clinics per year. While this limits our opportunities to be exposed to our dream careers, it also limits how many people can be treated a year. People camp outside these facilities for days, sometimes a week in advance depending on the hosting city. You would think that all these people were impoverished, but truthfully most of them look just like you and me. They depend on this foundation and by registering and participating in our race, you can help them change their smile one mile at a time.
