Background
Each year 10,000 patients, including children and adults, are diagnosed with all types of sarcomas. It is one of the more common types of cancer that affects children. In fact, about 20 percent of the sarcoma patients treated at Duke are children. It may involve bone or soft tissue and can be in any area of the body.
The Duke Multidisciplinary Sarcoma Team is an integrated team of doctors at the Duke Cancer Institute who focus on the care of patients with sarcomas, providing a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. There is not a single treatment for all patients; some may receive a combination of surgery and radiation treatments, others may require a combination of treatment including chemotherapy.
In 2008, the Duke Multidisciplinary Sarcoma Program held its first Sarcoma 5K/Run/Walk Event at Duke University to honor and celebrate those whose lives have been touched by sarcoma.
