Description
In Mecklenburg County, more than 7,000 men, women, and children are homeless. The Urban Ministry Center of Charlotte opened its doors in December of 1994 as a partnership of uptown congregations and business to address the needs of the poor and homeless with compassion, tangible help, and services designed to create a bond within the wayward community so our homeless ‘neighbors' feel a sense of place once again.
RunningWorks is one of those programs, and its lightning fast success in unifying the homeless and disadvantaged populations through sport by creating a family-type atmosphere is working one person at a time, one stride at a time, striving for progress and not perfection while gifting a sense of accountability, discipline and teamwork.
Our goal for the KNOW YOUR CRAFT 5k is to provide funds and motivate members of the RunningWorks family to further educational opportunities such as GEDs, continuing education and vocational school, which will lead to jobs and housing. The team works on a point system and has to earn the right to schooling, bus passes, and group races.
