What is HKY 100
HKY 100 Mile Ultra Run
Experience. Camaraderie. Competition.
Hickory’s inaugural 100 Mile Ultra Trail Race is for teams of 2 to 10 people and soloists. This demanding course puts you or your team racing around the clock challenging the limits of endurance, pace and strategy. The course consists of a 4-mile route taking you on double-track farm trails (believed to be old moonshine roads), to single track hiking trails onto the newly created Aviation Trail, then through Winkler Park into the Hickory Crawdad’s stadium where the start/finish line welcomes you back. Over 15,500 feet of elevation awaits you for this 100-mile challenge. The route consists of approximately 70% trails and 30% paved. There are several short steep climbs and two longer climbs at .65 miles each (see course map). The course will be well marked with cones, arrow signs and reflective tape for night running. Keep in mind this course will consist of off-road trails that include hills, descents, tight turns, roots, rocks and other trail type features.

All runners are welcome to set up a 10x10 canopy for your crew/family/etc.. to hang out and for you to use as your own aid station.
Pacers/Crew: Are allowed.
Key Rules & Responsibilities
Registration & Bib: Pacers need to sign waivers and wear a non-participant specific pacer bib to be identified. You can get these at Packet Pick-up.
Crew & Pacers: Are allowed... When & where? Crew and Pacers can meet their runner at the Start/Finish area or the Aid Station and only 1 Pacer at a time with the runner. Pacers may not run ahead of (draft for) their runner.
No Muling: Pacers cannot carry water, food, gear, or provide physical assistance on the trail; they are for moral support and aid at aid stations.
Aid Station Protocol: Pacers or Crew can help fill bottles/grab food at stations but must enter and leave with the runner; cannot get ahead and draft for the runner.
Support: Must be self-sufficient (food, gear) and manage their own logistics to get to/from aid stations.
Runner Accountability: The runner is responsible for their pacer's adherence to rules; rule-breaking (like littering or drafting) can lead to runner DQ.
Drop Bags: Are allowed at the Start/Finish and Goat Farm Rd. Aid Station, please have your name and bib number clearly written on each drop bag. You are responsible for getting your drop bags to your desired locations and cleaning up your gear and garbage post-race.
Night Running: Those running any distance that involves running at night are required to have a light on them during nighttime hours (head lamp, chest lamp, etc...). We want you to have fun and we also want you to be safe and see where you're going. Be sure to bring spare batteries, chargers, etc. If you don't have a light you're not running! You will be pulled from the race or DNFed.
Dropping out of the race: Runners always have the option to DNF (Did Not Finish) due to illness, injury or any other reason a runner wants or needs to quit. If a runner does end up dropping from the race it is extremely important that the runner or team members inform the Aid Station Manager or Race Director! A DNF runner can catch a ride back to the Start/Finish Zone from race personnel.
Dogs: Yes, dogs are allowed to accompany runners provided the runner takes responsibility for their dogs’ actions, and the dog is well-mannered and does not interfere with other runners or other dogs. Please be aware that it's the policy of the "City of Hickory" that all dogs on be on leashes. Please also be aware that there are sections of the course where cars are present.
Weather: This race is a rain or shine event. Organizers of the race will make determinations of postponing or cancelling based on severity of the conditions, forecasted weather and or acts of Mother Nature. Race staff may hold athletes at Aid Stations or modify the course due to extreme weather. This is a Fall event so we can have freezing temperatures to 85-degree days. It's VERY important that you come prepared with proper clothing and attitude.
Lodging/Camping
You are able to camp out at the start/finish area starting Friday at 12:00 pm and lasting through the duration of the race. Let me be super clear that this is NOT an official campground. There really isn't an open area for camping. You'll essentially be camping off the side of the parking lot next to your car.
Options! Since we’re near downtown Hickory there are lots of hotel/motel and B&B’s in the area. We encourage you to consider these options. https://www.visithickorync.com/places-to-stay/
Cancellation – Refund/Credit & Transfer Policies:
-You must email the Director for any type of withdrawal or transfer at: lriddile@hickorync.gov
Cancellation:
The race will take place rain or shine. If for any reason the event has to be shut down due to extreme weather or natural disaster you will be pulled from the course or held at an aid station until you can be removed from the course. Please, no arguing if this should happen. It is for your own safety.
Refunds:
There are no refunds. This can be frustrating, but we have to plan and budget for this race. See Credit policy below. While we do not offer refunds we do offer race credits in the following situations.
Transfers: are permitted from one participant as a "Gift" to another.
Credit:
-Withdraw from race and email Race Director 21+ days prior to the race = 50% race credit
-Withdraw from race and email Race Director 14-20 days prior to the race= 20% race credit
-Withdraw from race with less than 2 weeks to go = no credit
-All credits are good for one year from the date of the race.
If you can't make the event for whatever reason, you do have the option to transfer your entry to another runner. You or the other runner must communicate this team roster change or solo entry being transferred. Indicate who the transfer is from and who the transfer is going to in an Email to the Race Director: lriddile@hickorync.gov
Pregnancy & Postpartum Deferral: We love our mother runners and we get it---family is first! If you find out you’re pregnant and don't feel comfortable running the race anymore or your post-partum return to running timeline means the race is no longer feasible for you, we offer a 1-year deferral so you can come back and crush it when you're ready! You also have the option of transferring your entry to another runner.
HKY 100 Race Rules:
First and foremost, this race is intended to provide a fun experience, camaraderie and competition that provides a challenging introduction to trail running and ultramarathoning for the novice, while giving the more experienced runner a good test of their late-season fitness. That said, a few rules are inevitable to keep things “running” smoothly. Also, The Hickory Crawdad’s management, and City of Hickory have graciously allowed us to use their stadium, City property and Winkler Park & trail systems for this event, and we want to be respectful of that. So, please be mindful. Here are the rules….
1. Littering by runners, spectators, and crew is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated. At aid stations, use trash receptacles. Out on the course, stow trash until you reach the next aid station and dispose of it properly. Personnel conducting the course sweep should not find so much as the tab from a gel pack.
2. It is the responsibility of all runners to check in and out of all aid stations by announcing their bib number and full name. Here’s a great example, “#332 John Brown, with The Trail Brownies Team…”
3. If you must relieve yourself, do so well off the trail. Solid waste is to be buried. There are restrooms at the Aid Station and Start/Finish line. Plan accordingly.
4. Be polite to all volunteers, park staff, and anyone you encounter during the event. Many, many people have worked to make this event possible. Treat them with the great deal of respect and appreciation they deserve. Without them, the race could not happen!
5. All individual runners and relay team captains must check in on Saturday morning, regardless if they are attending the pre-race dinner on Friday night. Check ins shall be completed no later than 15 minutes before the scheduled start of their race. After that time, you may be assigned DNS (Did Not Start) status.
6. Your bib number must always be visible from the front.
7. Cutoff time is not negotiable. Where specified, cutoff time will be enforced by the Race Director. Their determination is final. Do not attempt to negotiate this.
8. Runners may not accept any outside assistance, other than at designated aid stations by volunteers, Crew/Pacer and within 100 yards of the aid station. Runners leaving the course for any reason must re-enter the course under their own power at the point where they left.
9. Runners who choose to abandon the race may do so only at a designated aid station and must notify the aid station manager that they are dropping out. The runner is responsible for returning their timing chip to the officials at the race start/finish area. Although it will not be a priority for aid station staff, we will do our best to arrange transportation back to the start/finish area, if needed.
10. Drop bags are permitted only at the Aid Station and Start/Finish area.
11. Pacers are permitted, starting at the Start/Finish or Aid Station. They must announce the bib number and person they are pacing (no drafting is allowed).
12. Sections of the course are true single-track when approached from behind, slower runners shall yield to the right to faster runners when prompted. The trail will be open to the general public. If other trail users are encountered, please be polite.
13. Obey race volunteers monitoring traffic.
14. Runners are responsible for the actions of their spectators/crew.
15. Park rules require that all dogs be leashed and under control; have all current licenses and tags; and that owners clean up after them.
16. Hiking poles may be used for any of the race distances. However, it is requested that runners be aware of other participants and other persons where they are not hit or stuck by hiking poles at any time.
17. Runners or relay teams finishing without reporting their bib number and name will not receive a finishing time.
18. Relay teams can have less people for a specific category but not more people required for a category, EX: “Team Go Fast” can run with 3 people in the 4-person relay category but not with 5 people when signed up for the 4-person category. No outside subs allowed (rostered team members only).
19. Relay teams can be comprised of any combination of male and female runners.
20. Team relay runners may choice to run any length they choose amongst their team for strategy and may sub into the race as many times as they wish provided they do so at the Start/Finish area or Aid Station by pronouncing their bib number and their name to the timing officials or Aid Station manager.
