BICYCLE POKER RUN CONFIRMATION AND EVENT INFORMATION
Check-in 1-2PM on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, Ocean Isle Beach.
Early Check-in available Friday, October 13, 4-6PM at the Museum of Coastal Carolina.
You will find all you need to know about Paws-Ability’s annual Bicycle Poker Run here. The event takes place on the island of Ocean Isle Beach (OIB), at the Museum of Coastal Carolina just over the causeway to the left. This is your invitation to join participants for a fun event. Funds from this event will support animal welfare programs in Brunswick County. Tickets are non-refundable.
Check-in: Event check-in will be from 1-2PM at the Museum on the island of Ocean Isle Beach. Early check-in will be available on Friday, the day before the event, from 4-6PM at the Museum location. At check-in, each participant will receive a wrist band and event pouch with event information. The wrist band will serve as admittance to the after-party. Your pouch will hold your Passport for the day.
Passport: Participants will receive a pouch with lanyard containing a ‘Passport’ for the ride. This Passport consists of Poker Run rules, a list of sponsors and their poker card pickup site locations, and a ‘score card’. The pouch will provide storage space for items collected at the various site sponsor locations.
Necessities: Helmets, though not required, are encouraged for riders’ safety. Bring what is needed to be safe and comfortable: jacket, sunglasses, sun screen, etc. Bottled water will be available at many locations for the riders. Porta johns are located behind the Museum, and restrooms are available along the route at the Community Center and at Jinks Creek Restaurant.
Bicycle Rental: Bicycle Rentals can be reserved in advance at Surf Unlimited Mercantile. Call 910-579-1525. They are located at 17 Causeway Drive SW, in the building on the left before the Island’s traffic circle.
Golf Carts: : Great News!
Due to insurance and liability issues, Paws-Ability (PA) will offer a limited option for golf cart reservations for the Bicycle Poker Run. First priority will be given to those with limited mobility. Advance registration is required due to the limited number of golf cart seats for this event.
If you want to reserve a seat on a golf cart, please do so when you register online or on arrival to Early Registration, Friday Oct 13, 4-6 PM, or at the Run. Register and pay $15 per person in advance to confirm a seat on a golf cart. Availability will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
Golf carts can only be driven by a designated PA member / driver. Please indicate if such a person is included in your group. Otherwise, a PA driver will be assigned to escort your party. There will then be 3 seats remaining on the golf cart for your use.
Reserved golf carts will be assigned specific departure times. Seats not claimed within 10 minutes of the assigned departure time may be reassigned to other participants.
The Route: Site locations will open to receive participants at 1PM. Maps will be available at the on-site registration area. No particular sequence or route is required. This is NOT a competitive event, nor is it a race. The paths chosen may range from less than 2 miles up to 7 miles. While participants are encouraged to visit all locations, at least 5 cards are necessary to form a poker hand.
The twelve card draw sites will stop distributing cards at 3:30 PM. All poker hands must be turned in at the registration tent area by 4 PM.
How to Play: There will be 12 card draw sites on the Island. Maps with sites marked will be available. Participants must make a stop at the sponsored site to select a card. The cards drawn will be marked by Paws-Ability volunteers on each participant’s Passport. Remember, at least 5 playing cards (i.e., 5 sites visited) are needed to form a poker hand. Participants will submit completed Passport cards along with their names at the end of the ride to be eligible for prizes. Prizes will be awarded for the best poker hand, and for the worst poker hand! Children will collect points to complete their game.
Who to Visit: Participants collect 5-12 cards by walking or riding as little as 2 miles. However, participants are encouraged to visit all site locations. Remember, these sponsors are businesses that have made a choice to support this event. Each will offer special prizes, coupons, snacks or beverages. Visiting the card draw sites will allow you to be eligible to win prizes at the after-party.
The After-Party: Your wrist band is required for entry to the after-party held under the tent beside the Museum on Ocean Isle Beach. Entertainment will be provided beginning at 3:30PM. Welcome announcements will begin at 4PM with food and drinks available. Fibber McGees, Papa John’s® Pizza, and Seaside Bakery and Wine Shop provide provisions for the after party, and water and sodas are provided by Food Lion Grocery Store. Music, prizes and the silent auction take place under the tent.
Silent Auction: Opens at 1PM and closes at 5PM. The silent auction will feature golf packages, restaurant gift certificates, artwork, weekend beach stays, and so much more! Payment for silent auction items can be made by check, credit card or, of course, cash. We will offer a ‘Buy It Now’ option for many silent auction items in case you cannot live without an item, and do not want to wait to see if you won the bid!
Raffle Prize: This year’s raffle includes a very special item: a new beach cruiser bicycle offered by Island Hoppers Bicycle Products in Ocean Isle Beach! Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at check-in for $5.00. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN.

Proceeds for this year’s Bicycle Poker Run will ensure that animal welfare programs in our County continue, and that critical spay/neuter programs continue to reduce the number of homeless animals in our community. Funds will also assist local animal rescue groups fund veterinary needs for the animals in their care. We will continue to support a program to assist in the care of pets of domestic violence victims while they stay at Hope Harbor Domestic Violence Shelter. We will continue to teach children why it is important to be responsible for a pet and about compassion for animals. Our newest program, Stella’s Touch, will help to keep pets with their family.
