THE RACE

The Run for Carly Rae 5K Run & 1 Mile Run/Walk was established to honor the life of Carly Rae Baron, who tragically lost her life to gun violence in 2020. Carly Rae was a beautiful person, who enjoyed basketball, modeling and spending time with her family and friends.

Carly Rae was a graduate of Eugene Ashley High school and good friends with current Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith. The Alex Highsmith Family Foundation wanted to create a scholarship that would help keep Carly Rae's memory alive for years to come. With the blessings of the Baron Family, the scholarship program began in 2023.

Participants who register by October 1, 2023, will receive an event shirt. Those who register after October 1st may get shirts while supplies last.

THE COURSE

Long Leaf Park

This course will be marked, open, and mostly flat, with volunteer directional monitors placed at select intersections. The course follows the nature walking path through Long Leaf Park, giving participants beautiful views of ponds, trees and flowers.

This race course is stroller friendly and wheelchair friendly.

THE CAUSE

The Alex Highsmith Family Foundation strives to make a positive impact on the lives of our youth in the Wilmington and Pittsburgh communities. Our 5 pillars, known as the Highsmith High 5, are: Physical Fitness and Nutrition, Athletic Participation, Academic Support, Social/Emotional Support, and Family Involvement.

ALL proceeds from the event fund academic scholarships to seniors in New Hanover County Schools. The Run for Carly Rae 5K race will also help raise awareness of the need to end gun violence in our community.
