Description

Inspired by our recent trip to Greece, we are bringing you our next Virtual Challenge full of running history lessons and magnificent scenery. The Panhellenic games were 4 seperate sporting festivals held in Olympia, Pythia, Nemea and Ishtmia.  The games in Olympia were the origin of the modern day Olympics and the Panhellenic games made up the 4 year Olympiad.  Lets follow the footsteps of these Ancient Greeks as you virtually run or walk from one ancient stadium to the next and get some miles (or Kilometers) in!

We have also added in a few other locations rich in ancient running history such as Sparta (where Ulysses had to win a race to win Penelope's hand in marriage) and Atalanti which is known for the huntress who would only be married if someone could beat her in a foot race.  All of the events will end with a lap around the track at the magnificent Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the finishline for the modern day Olympic marathon. You will have 122 days to complete the distance of your choice, Sep 1, 2022 to Dec 31, 2022.  Looking for more miles? Do the Zeus as a Relay team of 1 all by your self!

Last year, CFBNJ provided nutritious food for over 50 million meals through its network of more than 1,000 community partners including pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, mobile pantries, and child and senior feeding programs. For our hungry neighbors, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey is the powerful agent of change that fills the emptiness caused by hunger and provides resources that are essential to earning a sustainable living.

The FoodBank is a primary disaster relief responder in the state, and we are in the midst of a major relief effort to address the COVID-19 crisis. We are working to ensure access to nutritious food for vulnerable individuals and families and to meet the growing need. We are also working to create emergency meal kits with nonperishable foods, which can sustain a family for several days. For more info: cfbnj.org

History of the Panhellenic Games

The Panhellenic games is made up of 4 sports festivals held in Ancient Greece that consisted of chariot racing, wrestling, boxing, pankration, stadion (200 m run) and various other foot races, and the pentathlon (made up of wrestling, stadion, long jump, javelin throw, and discus throw). The 4 games make up the Olympiad, a period of time consisting of 4 years and was the main way Ancient Greek kept track of time:

  • Olympic Games: Held every 4 years and marked the start year 1 of the Olympiad (4 year time period).  These games are the first ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC. They honored the God Zeus and the winners received an Olive Branch Wreath
  • Pythian Games: 2 years after the Olympic games(Olympiad year 3), Held in Delphi and honored the God Apollo with the winners receiving a Laurel wreath
  • Nemean Games: Held every 2 years, the year before and the year after the Olympic Games, honored the God Zeus and Hercules and the winners received Wild Celery
  • Isthmian Games: Held every 2 years, same year as the Nemean Games but a different time of year.  These games honored the God Poseidon and the winners received Pine.
