Description

Hands In 4 Youth invites you to the first annual HIKE-A-THON and Field Day at Camp Vacamas on Saturday, September 8th!

Are you an alumni of Camp Vacamas? One of our recent camp or after-school program families? Part of the local community? Or, do you just love the great outdoors and want to support a terrific non-profit organization while you’re at it? Come out for our FREE Field Day, a full day of family-friendly camp activities, food and entertainment! The centerpiece of Field Day will be our Hike-a-thon event: you can register to join the Hike-a-thon, or just come out to cheer on our hikers: ALL ARE WELCOME for a day of fun and togetherness at Hands In 4 Youth’s Camp Vacamas!

By joining our first-ever 5k HIKE-A-THON, you'll help raise funds to support our programs for deserving youth, and have the opportunity to experience the rugged beauty of our 230-acres of wooded hills and lakeshore in a whole new way.  Register TODAY for the Hike-a-thon as an individual, or build a team! There is a small registration fee to support event costs, but that will be refunded to you once you fundraise $100 or more. You'll also receive an exclusive Hike-a-thon 2018 t-shirt. You'll have your own page that gives you all of the tools you'll need to get the word out, and build donations from generous folks that want to sponsor your hike. We're here to help! We'll provide updates and any resources you need to reach your own personal fundraising goal. (Note that there is NO minimum fundraising goal that you must commit to; every dollar you raise is meaningful!)

The mission of Hands in 4 Youth is to inspire young people from diverse backgrounds to be fully engaged in school and life so they have opportunity and choice to pursue their dreams. The foundation of our programs is Camp Vacamas: for 94 straight years, we've offered children from all walks of life the chance to come to camp for weeks of fresh air and sunshine, adventures and teamwork, challenging themselves physically, making new friends and memories for a lifetime in a safe and nurturing environment. Not just during the summer: the students in our after-school enrichment programs come to Camp Vacamas as well, and fun, hands-on learning activities are part of every program. Nearly 100% of our camp families require some level of financial assistance to send their kids to Camp Vacamas, and by joining the Hike-a-thon, YOU will help make that possible--and have fun doing it!

You don't have to hike to help us make our Hike-a-thon a success: you can click the DONATE button RIGHT NOW to help us beat the goal and contribute to our programs for kids.

We thank you for your support and can't wait to see you at our first Hike-a-thon and Field Day!

About Hands In 4 Youth

Hands In 4 Youth (HI4Y) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Founded in 1924, HI4Y has a 94-year history serving youth from the New York and New Jersey region, and we continue to build on our history by providing year-round programs that respond to the evolving needs of economically-challenged communities, families
and children. Our award-winning summer camp program provides children aged 6-17 with a valuable respite from their usual urban environments, a chance to enhance social and communication skills, opportunities to challenge themselves physically and mentally, and weeks of fresh air and healthy living. Our comprehensive afterschool program for elementary and middle school students takes place throughout the school year, Monday-Friday in partner public schools in New York City. It provides a safe, positive atmosphere, staffed by culturally diverse, relatable educators, and a weekly curriculum combining physical activity, academic support, creative arts, and hands-on learning.

Our guiding principle is that a young person’s road to development and success can most effectively result through the practice of setting and pursuing goals, living responsibly in the world, reflecting on achievements and failures, and taking progressive action towards their goals. The development areas around which we build
our programs are: Social Intelligence, Self-Efficacy, and Educational Prowess. Short-term behavioral outcomes in each area are predictors of long-term changes that lead to more positive conduct, stronger academic performance, and healthy social development. Annually, an outcome evaluation designed for HI4Y by a team of leading evaluation experts from Algyrhythm (algorhythm.io) is administered, to assess program impacts for the children attending Camp Vacamas. Last year, 87% of our campers made statistically significant gains in youth development areas proven to affect “ability to thrive” long term.
