Description

Aaaaand we're back!!!

After the 2020 hiatus, we are eager to resume in-person races with the beloved Al Goldstein Speed Series! Please refer to our website (https://pptc.org/summer5k) for all details about the series, including information on our COVID-19 safety protocols.
Please be sure to check our website regularly as details are subject to change, pending NYC Parks and local government regulations.

Registration

  • Individual races are $15 each. Unlike years past, we will not be offering a season bib for all 7 races. We apologize for any inconvenience.
  • Registration for each race will open 2 weeks in advance and close at noon on race day.  There will be no in-person, day-of-race registration.
  • You may only register for 1 race at a time. Please be mindful of our limited capacity this year, and only register for races if you are confident that you can participate.
  • Registration ends at NOON on the day of the race, so don't delay!
  • Due to liability reasons, we cannot allow strollers or pets.
  • Prospect Park Track Club welcomes athletes with all abilities, and if you have questions about race accommodations, please email us.

2021 Race Dates & Wave Starts

Races take place on alternating Wednesday evenings in Prospect Park.

We will be starting 2 waves of runners at 7 and 7:15 pm. You may select the wave you wish to be in when you register. We know this doesn’t match with tradition* but we also anticipate modifying the wave start as government regulations change over the summer.

  • May 26
  • June 9
  • June 23
  • July 7
  • July 21
  • August 4
  • August 18

Races will take place rain or shine. Any decision to cancel due to dangerous weather conditions will be announced in the afternoon the day of the race, and will be messaged through email, PPTC social media, and updates on this website.

*Traditionally, this race began at 7:10 pm because in the olden days, cars could use West Drive until 7:00 p.m., and we would wait until all of the cars were out of the park to begin the race.

Race Day Logistics & Amenities

Races will start on East Drive, just north of LeFrak Center at Lakeside, and end on the East Drive at Lakeside Center. At Bluestone Cafe at Lakeside, you will find the following amenities:

  • Bib pickup: LeFrak Center at Lakeside, from 5:45 pm onward on the day of race
  • Bag check will be offered
  • Lockers available (for a fee)
  • Bathrooms (real ones!)
  • Individual bottles of water and water fountains. We will NOT be providing water stations on the course in 2021.
  • We will post race results online after the race, including age group awards: 9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+. Unlike years past, we will NOT be holding an awards ceremony or issuing medals to participants.
  • The time limit on this course is 15 minutes/mile.

Walkers are welcome, but due to liability reasons, we cannot allow strollers or pets. We recommend signing up for the 6:45 pm wave if possible.

COVID Safety Protocols

Prospect Park Track Club is committed to ensuring the safety of our runners, members, volunteers, and neighbors. In order to ensure a safe event, we are putting the following measures in place. Please adhere to the following safety guidelines for this race, and note that this is subject to change, pending NYC Parks and local regulations changes:

  • Face Coverings: Runners must wear a face covering while waiting to start and at the finish, and any time they are unable to be socially distanced from other people.
  • Start: Runners will be directed to line up standing 6 feet apart in the recreation lane, and we will release runners in 2 waves, starting at 7 and 7:15 pm. This is a chip timed race.
  • No Water Stations on Course: We will not be providing water stations on the course. We will provide runners with an individual bottle of water that can be picked up at the race finish. In addition, there are water fountains available throughout the park.
  • No Awards Ceremony: We will not be distributing medals or holding an awards ceremony at the finish of this race. Runners must wear a face covering in the finish area, must not congregate, and must disperse shortly after finishing the race. Final race results will be posted online.
  • Contact Tracing: Race organizers will maintain a log of participants and contact information for contact tracing. In the event that someone reports a positive test, we will send communications to all participants and volunteers for that race to inform them and ask them to get tested. Race organizers will cooperate with any state and local contact tracers to help contact participants as necessary.

Charity Partners

We are proud to announce that for the first time, a portion of the proceeds from this race series will be donated to community non-profits:

  • Center for Anti-Violence Education (https://www.caeny.org/): CAE works to prevent hate violence in our communities by centering the experiences of the people most marginalized. Educational programs combine awareness-raising, physical empowerment, leadership development and activism.

  • Back on My Feet (https://backonmyfeet.org/): As a national organization operating in 14 major cities across the US, Back on My Feet combats homelessness through the power of running, community support and essential employment and housing resources.

  • Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (Restoration) (https://restorationplaza.org/): relentlessly pursues strategies to close gaps in family and community wealth to ensure all families in Central Brooklyn are prosperous and healthy. A flourishing Brooklyn community consists of strong businesses and institutions that are anchored in a culture of equity and inclusion.

We encourage you to check out how they’re making our community better, and if you’d like, you can make an additional donation when you register for the race. All donations collected throughout the series will be shared equally among our charity partners. Should you like to make an additional donation, please use the DONATE button at the top of the page, and thank you kindly for your generosity.
