A 3 Mile CommUnity Run/Walk from Genesee Valley Park to Halls of Justice Courtyard (99 Exchange Street) in procession behind Retired RPD Sergeant, Brett Sobieraski for his final 3 miles of his final Marathon.
Let's Explain ....
Officer Anthony “Maz” Mazurkiewicz of the Rochester Police Department was killed in the line of duty on July 21st, 2022. At the time of his death, he was assigned to the elite Tactical Unit that has the number designator of “8”. Maz is survived by his wife Lynn, 4 children, 3 grandchildren, his parents, a sister and brother. He served 29 years with the RPD and was looking forward to his retirement.
Brett Sobieraski is honoring Mazurkiewicz's sacrifice & raising money for his family by running through 8 states & finishing here in Rochester. Sobieraski served with law enforcement for more than 30 years, including as a sergeant and SWAT leader for the Rochester PD. He is also and author & has written a book about his experiences as an ultra-endurance athlete. Brett has utilized his grit and determination to finish extreme challenges, such as swimming across Lake Ontario, running 175 miles along the Erie Canal, and completing the 135-mile Badwater in California’s Death Valley.
Sobieraski is now is looking to complete 1247 miles in honor of Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, "Starting on April 23rd, I will begin running a marathon (26.2 miles) a day, EVERY DAY, starting in Florida through 8 states finishing at the Fallen Officer Memorial in Rochester, NY on June 11th. A total distance of 1247 miles will be run. The mission of “8 States for Maz” is to honor his sacrifice and raise money for his family. The goal is to raise $100,000 and all money raised will be turned over to Lynn Mazurkiewicz. Our duty is to remember the sacrifices of the fallen and show them, and their families, that we are forever grateful."
We invite you to run or walk the final 3 miles with Brett to finish his journey. We will all be behind Brett as he guides us to the Hall of Justice Plaza for a Welcome Home Celebration. This is open to anyone, so please feel free to bring family & friends!
In addition to donations and support, if you are unable to run/walk starting at noon please join us at the finish on June 11th at 1:00 pm at the Halls of Justice courtyard, 99 Exchange Blvd. The Mazurkiewicz family will be attending & would love the support of our loving community!

The start is located at Genesee Valley Park just north of Elmwood Road from where Genesee Waterways (149 Elmwood Avenue) is located. We will be on the WEST side of the River. It's off a tiny street called S Plymouth Ext between Elmwood and Staybridge Hotel.
The goal, as long as that daily marathon goes as planned, is for Brett to meet us at the park by 11:45AM. He will say a few words. And at 12PM – his final 3 miles will begin will all of us proceeding behind him like an incredibly powerful ceremonial procession.
The route is 3 miles and can be viewed here.
