Description
A 13.1 mile course that circles Delta Lake starting and ending at Delta Lake State Park just a few miles north of the city of Rome, NY.
The race route consists of rolling hills, a few challenging, and follows rural country paved roads. The race runs through the towns of Westernville and Lee Center and offers beautiful views of the lake and nice residential neighborhoods along the lake shore. A view of Delta dam, a dam over a 100 years old, gives runners a boost for the "Dam Hill" before the last downhill mile to the finish.
The Roman Runners running club and devoted volunteers are stationed for water stops every 2 miles. Water, Gatorade, and "treats" are available with encouraging cheers and support for helping the runners.
The course is well marked. The roads are open to traffic but typically the traffic is very light around the lake. The course runs counter clockwise around the lake so the runners won't have to cross any intersections.
Preregistered runners are guaranteed a t-shirt and all finishers receive a medal. Hand crafted awards made locally are given in ten year age groups
Packet pick up is on race day. Bathroom and showers are available at the park as well as plenty of parking.
A non-profit race, proceeds go to local organizations for helping with sports and activities for kids.

Roman Runners Club
The Roman Runners running club is based in Rome, New York. The club was started by Carl Eilenberg and Al Stringham in 1971 as an informal running group who met Saturday and Sunday mornings at Gillette's for a run. We have since grown into a "formal" running club that still meets Saturday and Sunday mornings at 8:00 a.m., as well as Tuesday's evenings at 6:30 p.m.
Fifteen years after that first Saturday morning run, a group of us met and decided we wanted the name Roman Runner to mean more than just a person from Rome who ran. Our first step was to buy t-shirts and charge everyone who wanted one $10. A lear later in 1986, with the help of our friends the Utica Roadrunners, we joined the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). We started having monthly meetings and bought hooded sweatshirts to go with our shirts and hats. We also became a charitable organization pursuant to Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code and now devote a considerable portion of our resources to worthy causes such as the American Red Cross, the YMCA, athletic scholarships, etc.
For $15 annual membership, you will receive a distinctive Roman Runners T-shirt (new members only), a monthly issue of our newsletter, the Beep-Beep Express, membership in the RRCA, and an opportunity to earn a 1000 mile jacket. Included in your annual dues is $1.25 for a subscription to RRCA's quarterly magazine, Footnotes.
Some of our major events during the year include the annual Fort to Fort Race, the summer Tuesday night development runs at Rome Catholic High (RCH), the Honor America Days Races (the region's oldest race!), the last development party, the Y-to-Y Run, the Thanksgiving Day 5 Mile Prediction Run, and our annual awards banquet.
During the year, we have many informal "get togethers" after local races. We also try to travel to a few major races or marathons together each year. Members also participate in many non-running activities together, such as attending local hockey games and organizing cross-country skiing outings.
We have runners who run 5 minute miles and others who run 12 minute miles, so there is always someone to run with. Just fill out and sign our simple membership application, mail it to Kelly Moonen along with your check for $15 and begin logging those miles for your 1000 mile jacket.
We hope to see you at a Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday run! Check our on-line calendar for complete information. If you have any questions about the club or our activities, please feel free to e-mail us.
Good luck in your running!
