On July 20, 2009 19 year old Matt Scarpati was riding on the Wantagh State Bike Path. At about 7:30 pm a drunk and speeding motorcyclist, racing northbound on the Wantagh Parkway, left the parkway and struck and killed Matt. The sculpture, "Celebrate Life" that is in Cedar Creek Park, was born from a ghost bike that was presented to the Scarpati Family, as they fought for the guard rails that now create a barrier along the 4.5 miles of bike path that runs south of Merrick Road the Jones Beach Theatre. We celebrate the athlete in each of us, and the joy in doing this with friends and family. Never give up and keep on striding, no matter your pace. Keep running!
Please note that check in will be at Cedar Creek Park from 6:45 am to 8:15 am.
Be sure to place your Bib facing front on your chest or abdomen in clear view of the camera.

We want to thank all of the sponsors, participants and volunteers, who make it possible for the Miles For Matt Foundation to continue its mission. When Matt was first killed, our goal was to get the guardrails and to help all people to enjoy athletics in a safe environment. We support young athletes through scholarships, training programs and through support of athletics at Sunrise Day Camp - a free day camp for children with cancer and their healthy siblings. We have never forgotten how important MADD and the Victim Services were to us and to many others. MADD supported us in court and showed us how to navigate the painful periods. These services are free of charge, but nothing is truly free. Therefore, we continue to support MADD.
The sculpture and the landscaping that surrounds it were made possible by the Scarpati Family and those who support the Miles for Matt Foundation.
