Many children and adults with challenges love to play sports. They may be visually challenged, use a wheelchair or assistive device, or have other “real” needs, including cognitive issues. In our area, thousands of these kids, adults, and veterans do their best to take part in special education programs on grass and dirt fields.
Challenger Miracle Field provides all people with developmental and/or physical challenges the opportunity to participate in baseball, soccer, and other team sports in a safe, and enjoyable environment. It is a place to join together with other families to develop self-esteem and make new friends
It is located at The Ridge Park Athletic Complex (1000 Ridge Road) adjacent to Webster Town Hall. The field has a flat, turf-like flooring for wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and other devices, enlarged dug outs to accommodate wheelchairs. The bases and pitching mounds are painted onto the surface so that there are no raised obstacles that you would find on a typical baseball field. The field was completed in August of 2017 and has been used for many baseball, flag football, soccer, and kickball games.
The second phase of Challenger Miracle Field included a pavilion, a concession stand, and restrooms that are all fully accessible and ADA-compliant. The pavilion provides cover from inclement weather and shade, and features wheelchair accessible picnic tables to create an inclusive space where families can enjoy a meal, engage in organized recreational activities, or use the field to play team sports such as flag football, basketball or soccer. This phase was completed just in time for everyone to enjoy this spring season!
The third phase of construction will be the Play with Possibilities Playground. It will allow typically developing children to play alongside those with disabilities with full accessibility to create a truly inclusive, ADA-approved play space. All kids will be able to participate in elevated and ground-level play with ramps, transfer points, and sensory–rich play opportunities throughout so that the play space is friendly to all children and parents as well as other caregivers, such as grandparents and service animals.
