The Society, formerly known as SHC, is a nonprofit organization that has been part of the Medina County community for over 72 years. The Society partners with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live their best lives. Our organization has been an advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1953. We were founded by a group of parents who wanted more for their children than life in a state institution. Over the years our services have evolved to offer community-based homes with personalized support, non-medical transportation, day programs, community inclusion activities, Camp Paradise, ombudsman services, a Resource Center and our People Together Program. While our services have grown, our vision of ensuring the individuals we serve are welcomed as active and valued members of their chosen community has remained the same.
The mission of Special Olympics Medina Ohio is to provide year-round sports training and competition. Our program starts with children age 8 to adults with intellectual disabilities. By using a variety if Olympic-type sports, our athletes are given continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness. In addition to demonstrating courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
