Sierah Joughin was 20 years old when she was taken from our community in 2016 by a repeat violent offender. Our non-profit organization, Justice for Sierah honors her life and legacy in many ways. Following her death, Justice for Sierah worked tirelessly to lobby Ohio lawmakers for the passage of Sierah’s Law. In December 2018, Sierah’s Law passed unanimously in the Ohio House with a vote of 85-0. The law created a violent offender database now used by law enforcement and everyday citizens to find out where violent offenders live in our communities and to protect our families. But our work doesn’t stop there. Sierah would want all communities in all states to be safer from violent offenders. That’s why we are working to educate lawmakers nationwide about Sierah’s Law, for eventual passage across the country.
At the same time, we are excited to announce the formation of Sierah Strong, a program that will empower our young people to be self-aware and practice self-defense. We are working with education leaders to create a curriculum-based program for first through eighth graders in Ohio schools. Sierah Strong will meet state standards and be ingrained in our education system that self-defense, empowerment, and knowledge is the first step towards protecting our youth. We have a big, but life-saving mission ahead of us and we are excited for the future. Funds raised from the race will be the foundation of support to allow us to develop and launch Sierah Strong in Ohio schools, with our first efforts starting in the Toledo community.
The Spirit of Sierah Run/ Walk is a 5K, family fun, costumes encouraged event that will have music, food, and beer. For the kids, there will be a Fun Run and a Trick or Treating event, along with bouncy houses and face painting too. Sierah was full of life and love so please join us in honoring her life at our Live, Laugh, Love Every Day 5K.
