Description
The Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship 5k Run/Walk was created to fund, educate, and raise awareness for a charitable organization. The Endowed Scholarship provides a student enrolled in Otterbein University’s Master of Science in Allied Health program - Healthcare Administration or Exercise Science track, with a financial award based on need. Ultimately, the scholarship is about making a difference in a student’s life. It also keeps Otterbein’s commitment to accessibility and affordability for its students; ensures that Otterbein will always be able to compete for the best and brightest students; and provides a legacy for someone who valued education.
The idea for this event was formulated by Dr. Joan Rocks, sister to Jean Rocks Mizia and Chairperson of the Health and Sport Sciences Department at Otterbein University, who wanted to commemorate her sister upon her sudden death from a brain aneurysm and give back to the college community. Jean was a very loving, giving, family and community-oriented individual who would always do for others before thinking of herself. She was also a very successful healthcare administrator, having served as Vice President for Operations at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship 5k Run/Walk is planned and managed by Otterbein University students in the Sport Management’s Event Planning and Sport Marketing classes. Over the past six years, students enrolled in both classes have raised more than $250,000 for several charitable organizations. Last year, over $26,000 was raised and 100% of the proceeds went to the Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship fund.
In addition to the 5k run/walk, the event includes a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, and educational materials regarding Otterbein University, endowed scholarships, and brain aneurysms. Race medals are given to the top three male and female runners only. Light refreshments are provided.
The Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship 5k Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2020, on Otterbein University’s campus in Westerville, OH, at 10:00am. Registration begins at 9:00am.
