Because of its special Civil War connection, each year the Adams County SPCA, located in Gettysburg, PA, holds its annual Loyalty Walk commemorating the many dogs that served as unit mascots during the Civil War. Two of the statues located on the Gettysburg battlefield include dogs - the monument to the 11 PA, which depicts Sallie, the units' mascot, who survived the famous battle, and an Irish Wolfhound, depicted on the monument to the Irish Brigade. This year we are adding a timed 5K, which can be run with your dog.
The event will be held on May 12th, 2018 beginning at the Gettysburg Area Middle School and winding through the Culp’s Hill area of the Gettysburg Battlefield. All finishers registered by May 10th will receive a medal specially designed to commemorate the event. Water will be provided at the beginning and end of the run but not on the course. Poop bags will be available to those running with their dogs. The humane officer will monitor the course to ensure that animals are not stressed. There will be food and vendors at the start/finish line as well as a dog-owner costume competition at 9:30. Rain or shine, come join the fun!
