About the Adult Learning Center (ALC)
The Adult Learning Center (ALC) is an education re-entry program designed to provide highly personalized, student-centered instruction to adult learners over the age of 18 from the Harrisburg area who would like to improve in one or more academic areas of study before they enroll in a formal GED or other classroom-based program. The Center offers individualized instruction in:
• basic math skills,
• basic reading and language skills,
• basic computer skills
• study skills,
• test taking skills, and/or
• skills needed to make the transition from ESL/ELL to basic English literacy

The ALC opened in October 2014 and since then, the enrollment has rapidly expanded and continues to grow. There is much diversity in the group in terms of age, ethnic and racial backgrounds, and a wide range of academic levels, abilities and interests. Most participants have set for themselves a number of more immediately achievable intermediate goals, such as obtaining a driver’s license, qualifying for promotion in their present employment, or getting a first job, but nearly all enrollees are planning to complete the coursework required for a GED certificate.
Students at the ALC work one-on-one with volunteer learning facilitators who use a variety of materials and resources in their instruction, including traditional textbooks, workbooks, and skill books, as well as state-of-the-art computer programs tailored to each student’s level and goals. Students and facilitators work together in private, cubicle-style workstations, each equipped with a computer, and all students are also encouraged to work on developing workplace skills, either independently or with the assistance of a facilitator, in the purpose-built computer lab.

The Adult Learning Center is Pine Street Presbyterian Church’s most recent community outreach program, operating in collaboration with the Tri-County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). It is located on the first floor of the Boyd Memorial Center at 234 South Street, directly across the street from Pine Street Church. Anyone interested in attending the ALC should first contact Tri-County OIC by phone at 717-238-7318 or in person at 500 Maclay Street to register and to schedule testing to determine academic needs.
For more information about the hours of operation, the instructional program, becoming a volunteer learning facilitator, or making a tax-deductible contribution to the ALC, please contact Dr. Kathleen E. White, ALC Director, at 717- 963-7444 or by email at alc@pinestreet.org.
