These events are perfect for children of all abilities in grades K-8 who enjoy running and are interested in learning more about Track and Field! Use these practices to get ready for the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile on July 28.
When registering for the track practices, please register all children and adults that will be attending through RunSignUp.
Our NEW summer track practices are designed to teach proper running form and how to compete in a track event. You can attend either or both sessions.
Practice #1 - July 12 at Aiken Elementary, Pittsburgh. Learn about several different distance events, proper running form, technique and track etiquette. There will be an opportunity to practice different distances. Our guest coach is Jenn Watenpool, Physical Education and Health Teacher and Kids of STEEL Site Coordinator in Keystone Oaks School District.
Practice #2/Mock Meet - July 20 at Robert Morris University outdoor track, Pittsburgh. We will review and build on what we taught in practice #1. There will be a timed mock meet at the end. Children AND adults are encouraged to run together.
Our Head Coach for these events is Stewart Jones. Coach Stu is P3R's Youth Outreach Coordinator, Project R.U.N. coach and a three time All-American track athlete at Wheeling Jesuit University. He is a USA Track and Field Level 1 Coach and continues to run and compete at a national club level.
What you need to bring:
1. A smile!
2. Appropriate clothing and shoes for running.
3. An adult - all children must be accompanied by an adult. No children can be left unattended.
Practice #1 Timeline (subject to change):
Check in/registration starts at 6:00 PM.
Practice is from 6:15 PM - 7:30 PM. We will practice different distances, including 100 M, 200 M, 400 M, 800 M and 1 mile.
Practice #2 and Meet Timeline (subject to change):
6:00 PM Check in/registration.
6:15 PM - 6:45 PM Practice time with Coach Stu.
6:45 - 7:30 PM Track Meet Distances
- 800 m (2 laps) or 1-mile (4 laps)
- 100 m dash
- 200 m
- Family 4x4 relay (4 people, each completing 1 lap. Adults are encouraged to run this event).
