Description

The Susquehanna River Runners Club of Wilkes-Barre is bringing an exciting new Fall 8K foot race to the area on October 18.

The race will take place on the scenic Susquehanna Warrior Trail just as the leaves begin to explode in color, making for a most wonderful time, place, and event in which to experience nature's beauty.

The race starts at 11:00am in Shickshinny on N. Canal Street near the borough park, and quickly transitions onto the trail and proceeds northeast following the Susquehanna River along the flat and fast rolled cinder-surfaced rail-trail towards West Nanticoke.  Near the historic Search Cemetery, runners will reverse course and race back into town for a thrilling finish on the trail.

Custom plaques have been prepared for the fleetest male and female finishers and medals are to be awarded to the top three runners in each age grouping.

Every entrant preregistered by October 9 is guaranteed a commemorative long-sleeved tee shirt. The shirts have been designed to mark the genesis of this event that coincides with the historic commencement of the extension of the trail from the Garden Drive-in in Hunlock Creek to the Plymouth Recreation ball field complex near Plymouth.

Food and refreshment, both hot and cold, will be available for all runners after the race, at the picnic pavilion located in the borough park.

Entry forms are available at www.neparunner.com, www.scrantonrunning.com, at the Susquehanna Warrior Trail website and Facebook page, and at the club's Facebook page or website at www.susquahannariverrunners.org.

Interested runners may contact club vice-president Chris Wadas at Chris.wadas@gmail.com or Tony Pszeniczny at tony.pszeniczny@gmail.com for more information.

The Susquehanna Warrior Trail is widely used for training by the local running community including the Susquehanna River Runners Club, the Wyoming Valley Striders, and local high school cross-country and track and field athletes.

This is the second running event to be held on the Susquehanna Warrior Trail since its inception. The inaugural race was the Susquehanna Warrior Trail 5K Run/Walk that is held annually in the Spring and had a successful 8th anniversary this past April.

All proceeds from this event are to benefit the Susquahanna Warrior Trail Council in support of the ongoing maintenance of the trail.
