FAQs

How big will my group be?

Each team will typically include 2–4 volunteers. You’ll be paired with others to ensure safety and support—no one goes out alone.

Will I be safe?

Yes. Safety is our top priority.

Each group will:

  • Be accompanied by a police escort for added security (please note that teams in NE Tarrant County will not be accompanied by police)

  • Receive training on how to approach people respectfully and safely

  • Avoid entering abandoned buildings or unsafe areas

Is it safe to talk to people experiencing homelessness?

Yes, when approached with respect and empathy. Most people are open to conversation, especially when treated with dignity.

You’ll be trained on:

  • How to introduce yourself

  • What to say (and what not to say)

  • How to disengage if someone doesn’t want to talk

What kind of questions will I be asking?

You’ll ask brief, respectful questions about:

  • Where the person slept the night before

  • Age, gender, race/ethnicity

  • Veteran status

  • Health conditions or disabilities

  • Length and cause of homelessness

All responses are confidential and help improve services and funding.

What time does this normally end?

Most teams will finish within 3 to 4 hours. Please note that you must return to your check-in location after counting to return materials.

Where will we check in?

Check-in locations can be found on the home page or in the confirmation email you received after registering.

*2027 check-in locations will be announced soon.

How does check-in go?

At check-in, you’ll:

1. Sign in and confirm your team assignment

2. Receive materials (maps, hygiene kits, survey tools)

3. Get a quick safety briefing and training

4. Head out with your team and police escort

What should I wear/bring?

Dress for the weather and comfort:

  •  Warm layers

  • Comfortable shoes for walking

  • A hat, gloves, and a flashlight are helpful

  • Avoid flashy jewelry or anything that could be a distraction

You may wish to bring portable phone chargers, snacks, drinks, and/or warm beverages for your team.

Can I bring my pet or service animal?

While we strive to make the Point in Time Count as inclusive as possible, we do not recommend bringing animals (including service animals) to count with you. You may encounter people's pets while surveying, and we cannot guarantee that they will be leashed or pet-friendly.

Can I hand out anything?

Yes! Teams are encouraged to bring hygiene kits to offer during the count. These may include:

  • Toothbrushes & toothpaste

  • Socks

  • Hand warmers

  • Non-Perishable Snacks

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Body wipes

  • Chapstick

  • Deodorant

  • Mini hairbrush

  • Chapstick/ moisturizers

Can I choose my counting route?

While we can’t guarantee specific routes in advance, the best way to ensure a priority route is by having at least one team member arrive early. Even when a route is prioritized, we can’t guarantee that teams will encounter individuals during the count due to factors such as weather, enforcement activity, and movement patterns. Routes where no one is encountered are still important and help us ensure an accurate and complete count.
