FAQs
Saturday, February 27, 2027. Both the Marathon and Half Marathon start at 9:00 am PST from Goldie's and The Roost, 701 N Main Street, in historic Coupeville on Whidbey Island. Both races finish there too.
On Friday evening (2/26), packet pickup opens at 7:00 pm at Goldie's. At 8:00 pm, the fun moves upstairs to The Roost for a pizza party that's private to RSM runners, volunteers, and spectators. On Saturday, Goldie's is race headquarters from start to finish, with awards and speeches around 3:00 pm.
All runners receive a custom race t-shirt and finisher medal. You also get to enjoy a spectacular and scenic course with ample stocked aid stations and kind volunteers.
Yes, a Virtual Marathon and a Virtual Half are available for $85. Virtual runners can run an course they choose during the allotted times on RSM weekend. We will ship your t-shirt and for runners that show proof of completing the distance, your medal as well.
From the Seattle area, take the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry and drive north to Coupeville (or drive further north to the Deception Pass Bridge and then south down the island). From the north, drive across Deception Pass Bridge. From the Olympic Peninsula, take the Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry. Check WSDOT ferry schedules and allow extra time on weekends.
Yes, packet pickup will also be available at Goldie's on race morning starting at 8 am PST.
Coupeville has many great places to stay. We recommend these three:
- Captain Whidbey Inn, the historic 1907 lodge on Penn Cove, right on the race course and three miles from the start/finish.
- Anchorage Inn Bed & Breakfast, just steps from the start/finish.
- The Coupeville Inn, an easy two-block walk to the start/finish.
Whidbey Island also has tons of great Airbnb options, and there are more hotels in nearby Oak Harbor, about 10 minutes north. If you're traveling from out of town, we encourage you to come spend the weekend - Coupeville and Whidbey Island are truly special places.
Runners and spectators can park in the lot at Goldie's, but it will likely fill quickly, so arrive early. Overflow parking is available on most streets in Coupeville, as well as in the free public lot next to the Coupeville Library (788 NW Alexander Street), a few blocks' walk from the start/finish. That lot also has public restrooms. Please respect "no parking" signs and don't block driveways, since Coupeville is a residential community. Please carpool if you can to free up spaces for others visiting Coupeville.
It's a mix of coastal roads and trails. Both races head across the island to Ebey's Landing, then through the Kettles Trail System. The Half returns via Madrona Way along Penn Cove, past the Captain Whidbey Inn, and back into Coupeville. The Marathon adds a few miles of natural beach and Whidbey's country roads before rejoining the Half route on Madrona Way to the finish. Course maps are linked in the Event Info section
The course is rolling, not mountainous, and its high point is only about 280 feet above sea level. Total elevation gain is just under 1,400 feet for the Marathon and about 760 feet for the Half.
You'll run on mostly paved road, some dirt and forest trail, and a few miles of beach (Marathon only and tide-permitting). The beach stretch for marathoners is hard packed sand. Most runners wear road shoes, but hybrid or light tread trail shoes work fine as well.
Yes. The course closes at 3:00 pm for the Marathon (6 hours) and 1:00 pm for the Half (4 hours).
In addition to the start/finish area, the Half has three aid stations (at miles 5, 9, and 10) and the Marathon has five (at miles 5, 9, 16, 20, and 23). Each one is stocked with water, an electrolyte drink, fruit, and snacks. There are porta potties and public restrooms throughout the course as well.
Every aid station has a first aid kit. The local sheriff's office and fire department are also aware of the event and ready to help if needed, though we don't anticipate needing them.
Late February weather on Whidbey can change quickly, so come prepared with layers. It is winter, but the last two years have brought dry, sunny, crisp race days. You never know!
All sales are final. Refunds aren't given even if the race is canceled because of extreme weather, permit issues, or other events beyond our control. We incur costs in advance and need to cover them.
Runners that register for one distance can switch to the other as long as they inform the race director or staff at the time of packet pickup.
All profits go to The Rock Solid Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. You can add a donation during registration or use the Donate button.
Absolutely! Goldie's is the place to be on Friday night and at the start and finish on Saturday.
