RUNNING WILD ON DAUFUSKIE ISLAND

The running experience you've been waiting for. It all begins before the run - with an awesome water taxi ride from Hilton Head Island to Daufuskie Island - can you say dolphins!! Relax and enjoy the scenery as you coast along the beautiful waters that separate the Islands - full of dolphins and lowcountry flora and fauna. Once you arrive to Freeport Marina on Daufuskie Island, you'll have more time to relax and get ready for the 5K run that takes you through wild and remote Daufuskie Island. After your race is finished, plan on sticking around with our host the Old Daufuskie Crab Co. - they'll have live music, cold drinks, and the best seafood you'll find anywhere in the lowcountry. Whenever you are ready, we'll transport you back to Hilton Head Island on our water taxi and where you'll see plenty more wildlife and be relaxed by the sights and sounds of the water. We can't wait to host you at the Scrap Iron 5K!

GETTING TO DAUFUSKIE ISLAND

Island Head is operating the Water Taxi that will transport participants between the 2 Islands. The Water Taxi takes 45min to travel between the 2 Islands.

Water Taxi - HHI - Departure / Arrival location - Broad Creek Marina (HHI)
** Parking - Once you arrive in the general parking area for Broad Creek Marina (to the right of the dry boat storage), head towards Broad Creek (the water and docks) - a staff member will meet you and check you in.

Water Taxi - DI - Departure / Arrival location - Freeport Marina (DI)

If you choose the Water Taxi option - you have 2 choices on the time you want to depart Hilton Head Island - 12:15p -or- 1:45p.

The Water Taxi takes 45min to travel between islands - so, if you choose to depart HHI at 12:15p, you will arrive at Daufuskie Island at 1p. And, if you depart HHI at 1:45p, you will arrive at Daufuskie Island at 2:30p.

The same goes for your return from Daufuskie Island - you have 2 choices to depart Daufuskie Island - 5:15p -or- 7p - and the Water Taxi takes 45min to travel back to HHI.

PURCHASE EXTRA WATER TAXI

Wanna bring a friend (Non-racer)?
We have included the option to purchase a Water Taxi for your NON-RACER during the race registration process. During your registration, you will be asked to select your Departure and Return time - then you will have the option to purchase another water taxi ticket(s) for a friend/family - we assume they will be traveling at the same time as yourself.

WANT TO COME EARLY - OR - STAY LATE

Island Head offers a wide range of fun activities on Daufuskie Island. Check out their website to plan and book your fun on Daufuskie. We recommend you grab a golf cart and explore beautiful Daufuskie Island - we always have a great time on a golf cart and we always find new areas we haven't explored - Daufuskie is full of historical markers and buildings - not to mention the abundance of natural beauty everywhere.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN

The safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff is our paramount concern - and, this concern shapes our decisions regarding inclement weather. Any decisions regarding the weather will be made the morning the event. We plan on producing a great event and we will be at the race site ready to do so. Should the weather pose any threat to safety - we will postpone the start of the event until the weather clears. If the weather does not cooperate after a reasonable amount of time, we will make the decision to cancel the event. Any decision regarding rescheduling the event or entry credit to another event will be made as quickly as possible and be communicated via email to all participants.

More Than a 5K

Course

The Scrap Iron 5K course is essentially a one loop course - with a little out-n-back in the middle.

The Course is a mixture of hard packed trail (~ 250m)  - paved road (1.25k) - and, hard packed / groomed dirt road (3.5k).

The Course is completely flat and fast - with most of the course shaded by beautiful Live Oak trees and an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna.
