Description

"Cancer's A Beach" is a 5K fun run and walk to raise awareness for head and neck cancer. Michael Carie was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in January 2011.  He received his care and treatment through MUSC Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Cancer and Hollings Cancer Center.  He was successfully treated through chemotherapy, radiation and surgical resection.  In summer of 2012, he began having symptoms supsicious of recurrence but all workup was negative.  One week prior to his passing he was found to have a metastatic brain lesion that was untreatable.  He passed away on September 21, 2012.  Even though he is not present with us, his memory lives on.  He loved Charleston with a passion.  A fisherman at heart he spent his good days fishing along the intracostal waterways.  "Cancer's A Beach" is not only in memory of Michael Carie but all head and neck cancer patients along with their families who fight cancer's battle daily.

Proceeds to benefit OHANCAW to promote free oral cancer screenings, local school talks ont he causes and dangers or oral, head and neck cancer, travel assistance to low income and out of town patients, and fundraising through various events throughout the year.
