Description

Thank you for your interest in the McKirdy Micro Marathons!

As we all know, the past year has been an incredibly challenging time. Our first and foremost goal with these events is to give you a safe, close-to-home marathon with as low of a risk of cancellation as possible. Of course, we don't have much control over how COVID-19 might impact our ability to go ahead with the event. Local regulations may cause us to need to cancel at last minute. Safety for the runners AND for the community will always be our number one priority. Our goal is to keep these marathons at very low capacity, with COVID regulations in place, in order to keep everyone as safe as possible and mitigate the risk of cancellation to the highest extent possible.

Regardless of local mandates, all participants will be required to wear a mask except for when they are actively participating in the event (that is, once you start running you may remove your mask. If you are not running, you are expected to have a mask on). We highly discourage spectators but if you are planning on bringing a family member or friend, we require them to wear a mask at all times. This is for everyone's safety. If you're not comfortable with wearing a mask, we'd kindly request that you decline to participate.

The capacity for the South Carolina race is 100 total runners.  The start/finish is at Lakeview Middle School in Greenville, SC.

Course

Runners will start on the Lakeview Link behind Lakeview Middle School, run down to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and take a right. After adding a short loop to the north, at the start, runners will pass back by the little girl cyclist statue at the Lakeview link connection at the 1.2mi mark. From that point on, they will head south to a hairpin turnaround before reaching Blue Ridge Rd crossing. Then they will head northbound on the right side of the Swamp Rabbit Trail to another hairpin turnaround before the Watkins Bridge crossing and do that same out and back stretch 5 times total until they reach the finish line which will be near the Lakeview Link connection. The course is very gently rolling and will be well marked.

The course is USATF certified (SC21003DW). View the course and elevation profile here!

COVID-19 Safety

Participating in any event obviously carries a certain amount of risk, but we are committed to doing everything possible to lower the risk as much as possible and keep your safety and the community's safety as the number one priority.

COVID Mitigations for this race include:

  • temperature checks and COVID questionnaires at bib pickup
  • starting procedures that allow for social distancing at the start, at aid stations, and out on the course
  • masks are required for all participants, volunteers, and spectators
  • participants are only allowed to remove their mask when they are actively exercising
  • aid stations will provide sealed bottles of water only, there will be no food or open containers
  • aid station tables will be separated by 6 feet, allowing multiple participants to retrieve water without violating social distancing guidelines
  • the event will have signage reminding people of the mask and social distancing requirements

Start Line Procedure

ALL RUNNERS MUST WEAR A MASK WHILE IN THE STARTING AREA! Failure to do so will result in disqualification. We highly recommend a Buff or something that can be easily pulled down once you're running, so you'll have it on you at the finish as well.

Runners will start 2 at a time on opposite sides of the Lakeview Link trail with 5 seconds between starting pairs. This means that runners with the fastest seed times will start 4 minutes and 10 seconds before the 99th and 100th starters. This will help with both social distancing at the start, and also on the trail while still keeping a race-like atmosphere! Please avoid creating large groups on the trail for the sake of COVID safety and also for the sake of other users of the trail who may be out during the race. If you have a special race partner who will be running your pace, please enter yourselves with the same projected race time. (Hint: seeding yourself and your partner at an oddly specific time like 3:32:43 will help to ensure that you will start together, but no guarantees will be made.)

Aid Stations

Aid stations will offer bottled water ONLY and will be located at 3.5, 8.5, 13.5, 18.5, and 23.5 miles on the course on the northbound side of the trail just past the Sulphur Springs crossing. There will also be an aid station on the southbound side of the trail at miles 5.5, 10.5, 15.5, 20.5, and 25.5 for a total of 10 water stations approximately 2 or 3 miles apart. We expect runners to be carrying their own nutrition (gels, chews, waffles, etc). Please do not litter on the trail. There will be designated drop areas following each water station with a volunteer to assist in depositing your trash.

Bib Pickup

You must pick up your bib on race morning in the parking lot at Lakeview Middle School. Times for packet pick up are still TBD.
