Description

Getting started can be scary. Our goal is to help each runner be seen, heard and accepted. This seven week course has been designed for folks that are serious about starting running. Our mission is to be inclusive to all runners. Maybe you don’t consider yourself a runner just yet, but you’ve been curious. Perhaps you used to run, but you stopped at some point and would like to reset. This program offers a supportive and informational environment. Our experts in run coaching and physical therapy are here to guide new runners into the sport we love and truly believe is a lifelong activity.

Program Synopses

Night #1, February 16th: Introductions

Opening night will be a get-to-know you session with Road Runners Club of America, Certified Running Coach, Greg Koch. We will take some time to get to know our fellow participants, outline course expectations and discuss why we run. In this session we will cover the basic terminology often associated with running and chat about what success looks like for a new runner.    

Night #2, February 23rd: Mobility for the Runner w/Empower U

This workshop will entail an interactive and educational course on joint mobility for the runner.  Participants will learn how to assess their mobility and will be led through a full series of drills and stretches to address their individual deficits.  This course emphasizes holistic body approach by beginning at the ankle and working up to the spine. By the end of the course, runners will have a repertoire of skills to program into their running regimen for injury prevention and improving performance!

Night #3, March 2nd: Training Plans

Get to know Road Runners Club of America, Certified Running Coach, Derrick Ettel. During this session Derrick will break down what a running training plan looks like and how long of a commitment is necessary when training for specific distances.  

Night #4, March 9th: Running Your First Race

Coach Derrick & Coach Greg take on how to prepare to run a race. We’ll review nutrition, clothing, race strategy and what to expect on race day.   

Night #5, March 16th: Strength Training for the Runner w/Empower U

This workshop will entail an interactive and educational course on strength training specific to the runner. Each participant will learn the fundamentals of single limb strengthening for endurance running and will learn how to assess their strength through movement screens. Runners will learn specific body weight strengthening movements and loading progressions. By the end of the course, runners will have a repertoire of strengthening movements that are specific towards running, injury prevention, and improving performance.  

Night #6, March 23rd: Running Workout Basics

Coach Derrick digs into the details of running workouts and training. In this session we will clarify terminology and focus on the benefits of running workouts. 

Night #7, March 30th: Closing Party & Dry Needling w/Empower U

Learn about the intervention of dry needling! Workshop and discussion will entail how dry needling is used for the injured runner and also how it is utilized for improving performance and recovery. A live demonstration will take place during the workshop with Q&A to follow. By the end of this workshop, runners will have learned how dry needling is performed in the physical and performance therapy world and how it is utilized for the running population!
