Description
In this challenge, we ask you to Walk with Me and the kids of Sierra Leone for the month of February on this journey to help improve their chances of getting an education.
In the Gbo chiefdom of Sierra Leone, there are kids who have to walk 4.5mi ONE WAY just to get to school. There is no public transportation for them to take and the long journey affects their ability to perform well during school as well as studying or doing homework after a long walk back. Additionally, after junior secondary school (JSS, which is middle school), many kids stop going to school altogether, since there is no secondary school (SS, which is high school) in the community. In order to go to SS, these children have to live with extended family/friends that live in Bo city, which puts them at risk of neglect, exploitation, sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy.
Tenki is a non-profit organization dedicated to elevating the health and education of women and children in Sierra Leone. This year, one of our goals, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is to get school buses in the Gbo chiefdom for primary school, JSS and to take kids to SS in Bo so they can continue their education. The buses will also hold a dual function for our Books on Wheels program to provide a mobile library and reading sessions to help increase literacy within the district.
This is a virtual challenge to help unite communities in support of pupils in Sierra Leone.
The goal is simply to walk 45 miles in 30 days. That's less than 2mi a day!
If you're really looking for a challenge and to get the full experience, you can aim to walk 9mi a day. This is what our kids from DoDo walk everyday to go to school, which is approximately 180mi for the month. Those that reach this goal will also get a t-shirt and a custom-made bracelet from Sierra Leone.
And you don't have to do this alone, just as the kids walk together to school, you can do this event as a team!
In solidarity with our children in Sierra Leone, we'll go on this journey and help raise funds to transform their experience and help them get to school in a more efficient and safe manner.
