Description
The Annual Saving Little Hearts 5k and Family Fun Walk will take place on February 24th 10am at Springbrook Park in Alcoa, TN. Our goal is to rally as many supporters as possible and raise funds to benefit the mission of Saving Little Hearts.
This fundraising event is designed to provide hope for the millions of families forced to face the challenges caused by a congenital heart defect. 1 in 100 babies is born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD), making CHD the most common birth defect. More children die every year from CHDs than all childhood cancers combined. Sadly, 20% of CHD babies do not live to celebrate their 1st birthday. 50% of them will have to have at least one invasive surgery in their lifetime.
Saving Little Hearts is an organization founded in East Tennessee in 2002 that is dedicated to helping children with congenital heart defects and their families by providing emotional assistance and educational information primarily through the distribution of care packages. One of the primary missions of Saving Little Hearts is to send care packages to the families of babies and young children who are about to undergo open heart surgery to correct a congenital heart defect. SLH sends out thousands of packages all over the USA. Care packages include items such as long distance phone cards, cameras, toys and coloring books, Ronnie the Raccoon, various heart defect literature for both children and parents, pens and journals, toiletries and other useful items.
Raising awareness and supporting CHD-focused organizations, will ensure that the thousands of children born in America with a CHD have a chance for a long and rewarding life and that they and their families have support!
