The TTU SVM Shelter Medicine Club is a student-run organization dedicated to advocating for animal shelters and addressing the growing needs of regional and rural animal populations. The club provides students with opportunities to gain practical experience, engage in community outreach, and learn about population management and shelter operations.

The inaugural Puppy Love 5K will be hosted by the Shelter Medicine Club on February 14, 2027. This Valentine’s Day event will bring together students, families, runners, and animal lovers for a fun and meaningful race that celebrates shelter medicine while supporting the next generation of veterinarians. Participants will enjoy a professionally timed 5K, commemorative race shirts, awards, free race-day pictures, and the opportunity to learn about adoptable dogs from the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. As the Shelter Medicine Club’s first-ever 5K fundraiser, this event will help establish a new annual tradition of community involvement and service. Funds raised will support student-led shelter medicine initiatives, community outreach, educational opportunities, and projects that enhance the welfare of shelter animals while preparing veterinary students to become compassionate leaders in the profession.
