Event Description

Description

The Jackalope Jam is a 6-hour, 12-hour, 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, and 100-hour timed event format, where you record the greatest distance possible during your chosen duration while running, walking, hiking, or, choosing to compete in our separate ruck divisions. New in 2025 you can also compete as a 2-6 person team in our 24-Hour Relay.

The Jackalope Jam takes place at 7IL Ranch, just outside of Cat Spring / Bellville, Texas. This private ranch offers a barn and pavilion staging area, ample parking and on-site camping, washroom and shower facilities, and RV hookup spots (RV reservations made separately through CampSpot). The open landscape and welcoming ranch setting create the perfect atmosphere for a true Texas ultra experience.

The course is a flat, fast 2-mile out-and-back on a short-grass and gravel farm road — one mile out to the infamous “Cone of Death” and one mile back. Participants complete as many full 2-mile laps as they choose within their selected event duration. Only completed laps count toward your total distance. It’s common for runners in the longer events to take extended breaks, sleep, set up personal aid along the course, or even leave the ranch and return later to continue their miles.

A fully stocked main aid station will be located at the start/finish, featuring our standard Texas-sized ultra buffet, including real food options for overnight participants. Runners are encouraged to set up their own tents and crew areas along the course for easy access throughout the event.

All participants receive a medal and either a race shirt or hoodie (depending on event distance), along with a participant keepsake. Solo competitors who reach 100 kilometers or more will earn a buckle, with milestone buckles awarded beginning at 100K. Bonus patches are available for ruck participants.

Relay Pricing and Format
: Each time an additional team member registers, the previous members will receive a $10 refund for every new person added. All members pay the same amount, the larger the team the lower the per-person registration fee. The relay is an open format, no designated order or number of laps per member is required. The only rule is that you can only exchange runners in the exchange area at the start/finish after completed laps. Members of teams can not be adjusted after the registration period closes (changes can be made by the captain until registration closes, adding/removing members, changing divisions, etc.) Teams can compete in one of three divisions: all male, all female, or coed (minimum 2 female).

General Event Information

If you are new to the Jackalope Jam, it is a very casual atmosphere event. We do not have a lot of rules, but here are a few reminders to make the event a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Parking/Camping: All vehicles must park in the large field area at the end of the 7IL Driveway. Watch the runners' course crossing (red in the above map). This field is also the primitive / car camping area.

  • Packet Pickup can be done in the final hour before the start of your event and throughout most of the week when we are not busy with race operations. This is located in the barn pavilion, where the race start/finish arch and aid station are.

  • Important: Do not cross the start/finish line with your bib (timing chip) during the event, unless you are completing a lap in its entirety.

  • Personal Support Area: You may set up canopies, tents, chairs, coolers, gear, etc along the course line section designated on the map above (behind the coned area). Set up may begin Tuesday after Noon and is available until next-Monday at Noon. Please do not leave anything when you leave, no trash, no donations. We will have extra porta-potties in this area.

  • Facilities and Trash: The barn pavilion has 24/7 washrooms and showers. On the side of the building is the dumpster, where all trash should be brought. The check-in area can be used to get out of the elements but please keep in mind this is our staff and volunteer home and office for the week.

  • Aid Station: The TROT Tent and Trailer will be set up with our staff and awesome volunteers helping keep you going all week long. There may be some periods we step away, but just ask if you need anything in particular or have requests, hot or cold. We will have all the snacks and typical aid station light meals each day. With that being said, you should plan on bringing your own race nutrition and larger meals, especially if you need something particular.

We will have the Bases Loaded and Snowstorm Shaved Ice food trucks, and the HoneyBrew coffee cart on Saturday.
  • Come and Go: The ranch is open throughout the week, and the timer doesn't stop until the end. It is common for our runners to leave the ranch and return to complete more laps. Just be sure to start your next lap from the point you last stopped on the course. Do not cross the start/finish line with your bib (timing chip) during the event, unless you are completing a lap in its entirety.

  • Lap & Mileage Tracking: Once the races begin, our live tracking on the RunSignup page will be live for each event. This is the best place to keep track of your laps and share your progress (short time delay). We will have a live lap reader screen at the start/finish if you would like to ensure your last lap is registered in real-time. Feel free to ask the race director/timer on duty, and we can double-check results and make corrections as needed. Additional timing tags will be available if you change layers and forget your bib.

  • Course: Each race will start under the arch at 9 AM each day, after a brief race meeting with the race director for final instructions. The course goes north down the farm road 1609 meters (one mile), to the "cone of death". If you do not go around the cone, your lap does not count. Once around the cone, return through the arch to log your lap. You may then depart for your next lap or anything else you need to do before heading back to the cone. Repeat. Again, do not come through the arch, unless you've been to the cone first. No partial laps. No official laps once the event duration has elapsed.

  • End Your Race: If you are leaving the ranch for the final time, either at the planned duration of your event or earlier, please make sure to check out at the timing tent. We will have your finishers' giveaway here before you go.

  • Volunteers: Will mainly assist with the aid station and ensure the bib reads each lap. Feel free to camp all week long, check in/out at the pavilion. Spots are available here, and let us know if you can no longer make it so we can free up the spot.

  • And finally, "What Happens at the Cone"... the Jackalope Jam is a fun race environment where we all get to know each other (almost too well). We're all adults here, well, most of us (we do have some youth again this year!). Just remember, this is a safe and inclusive place for all of our participants, staff, volunteers, and guests. I don't always want to know what happens at the cone; it stays at the cone, especially in those late hours, as long as it's done responsibly. Drink responsibly, drive responsibly, and treat each other how you want to be treated. Rest if you are tired before driving home. Ask us for assistance as needed.
