Our Story
Our hearts have been heavy for the Simmons family since Ken's recent diagnosis of glioblastoma multiform stage 4 brain cancer - the most aggressive and dangerous of all brain cancers. Surgeons were able to do a partial resection but there is a piece near his brain stem that is inoperable. He began chemo on January 15th and it has been very hard on his body. He uses a wheelchair and walker to get around. Due to brain surgery he has lost some vision and has developed a blind spot. Ken goes to physical therapy 3 times per week in hopes of regaining some strength on his left side. Ken is strong and relies on God's word each day to direct him.
Ken Simmons life as a Designer Engineer for Standard Aero has been put on hold. He and Michelle were not prepared for how hard this was going to hit them financially. He will not be able to work for months and may not be able to go back to work at all. Even though they have insurance, his treatments are very expensive.
Ken and Michelle grew up in the Grandview community and have been active in coaching sports and participating in FFA. Michelle was a Kindergarten teacher at Grandview Elementary for many years.
Michelle Simmons is an unbelievably positive sunny person that is a joy to be around. She has a Masters in counseling from Texas Wesleyan and is currently a counselor at Marti Elementary where she has been an integral part of children's lives for 6 years. Michelle has a real bond with our students and truly cares about them. Despite her busy schedule, she finds time to work in a guidance class with all of the kids that they truly look forward to. She is a gifted counselor who provides educational expertise for struggling learners, emotional support to children with often tragic home lives, and guidance for their parents and guardians. She even has a stash of shoes in her room to provide for kids that need them. I've watched her celebrate their joys with them, be their rock and support in trying times, and cry for them when things go terribly wrong.
Ken and Michelle have three daughters - Sarah, Hannah, and Ally.
