Tom's Try-athlon Athlete Guide

Location: Family Recreation Center, 1450 Forest Gate Road, Oak Brook, IL 60523

 

Time: Check-In & Transition Area Set Up: 6:30am to 7:45am

Orientation: 7:45am (all participants and 1 parent may be in the gymnasium)

Parking:
You can park in the main lot of the Family Recreation Center at 1450 Forest Gate Road, Oak Brook, IL.  The parking lot will close at 7:45am.

Check-In:

The transition area and check-in will open at 6:30am. Enter the gymnasium for check-in.  You will receive your packet and timing chip.  The packet will include a T-shirt, race map, bib, and safety pins.

The transition area is located on the north side of the facility.   There will be stalls lined along the transition area.  Please place your bicycle, helmet, shoes, clothes, etc. in a stall.  The main aisle must remain clear. Do not place your belongings in front or behind another participants.

1.      The timing chip must be secured onto the LEFT ankle of the participant.

2.      The race bib must be displayed during the BIKE and RUN portions of the event.  Please return to the transition area to attach your bib to clothing.

3.      Participants should be in swimsuits ready to participate in the swim.

All participants should be in the gymnasium by 7:45. Participants are allowed ONE parent to accompany them to the swimming portion.

Orientation:

Starting at 7:45am, staff will review the racecourse map and the number of laps with each age group before going to Swim Central.

SWIM

The swimming portion is held indoors at the Swim Central lap pool.  The pool depth ranges from 4ft to 7ft.  The participant will cross the timing pad and jump into the pool.  There is NO DIVING into the pool. 

The 12–14-year-olds will do 5 lengths (125 yards) of the pool.  They will swim down to the opposite end, cross under the lane line, into the next lane, and continue this pattern for 5 lengths.  The 9–11-year-olds will do 3 lengths (75 yards).  The 6–8-year-olds will do 1 length (25 yards).

The swimmers will be spaced out every 15-20 seconds.

Only 1 (ONE) parent or guardian may accompany the swimmer.  The parent or guardian is responsible for the swimmer’s belongings and must stay clear of other participants. 

Participants will only need a swimsuit, swim cap for long hair (unless tied back), and goggles (optional) for the event.  No swim fins, snorkels, masks, swim paddles, etc. will be allowed.  Non-swimmers or weak swimmers can wear a US Coast Guard Approved Lifejacket to enter the water and swim.  Lifejackets are provided by Swim Central, if needed.  Swimmers can slow down to rest but must continue with a forward movement.  After the swim, each participant will then move to the bicycle transition area.

SWIM OUT

Participants will exit the pool and the building on the west end of Swim Central.  The participant will stay on the sidewalk and cross the timing chip pad before preceding to the transition area. 

Be careful as the bikers are also coming into the transition area at this spot.

SWIM TRANSITION TO BIKE

Swimmers will enter the transition area and find their bike.  Helmet, bib, and shoes are MANDATORY.  Shorts/shirts are optional.

Participants must stay in the middle aisle and OFF their bikes in the transition area.  Helmets must be fastened under the chin before leaving the bicycle transition.

Only ONE parent per child is allowed in the bicycle transition area. 

For safety reasons, bikers must WALK/RUN their bikes out of and into the transition area.  Failure to walk your bike will result in disqualification from the event. 

Participants may mount their bike after crossing the transition exit timing pad.  Staff will notify you when to get on your bike.  There is a slight uphill incline at this point.

Stay to the right and OFF your bike to the timing pad.

Helmets must be worn and fastened throughout the entire bike portion. 

·         Ages 12-14: Complete 3 laps of the park (3.9 miles)

·         Ages 9-11: Complete 2 laps of the park (2.6 miles)

·         Ages 6-8: Complete 1 lap of the park (1.3 miles)

NEW FOR 2026

A median was added to Forest Gate Road between the Family Recreation Center parking lot and Jorie Boulevard. All bike participants must stay on the south side of the median and will turn left into the baseball field parking lot after the median ends (this is also where the left turn lane for car traffic onto Jorie Boulevard begins).

BIKE IN TO TRANSITION

Once the correct number of laps have been completed, you will follow the BIKE IN signs to the transition area.  STAY to the LEFT.

You MUST be OFF your bike when crossing the timing pad.  Failure to dismount your bike will result in disqualification.  Bikes MUST be walked/run in the transition area.  Return your bike to the original location.  Bike helmets can be removed.  Race Bib must be worn for the bike and run portions. 

TRANSITION TO RUN OUT

You will exit the transition area towards the right side the parking lot and start down the path to the right past the Family Recreation Center.

Parents/Guardians

Parents cannot participate alongside their child.  ONE parent is allowed to stay with the participant from the gymnasium to the swimming portion.  Parents must stay clear of participants and move promptly to the side of the transition area. Parents and spectators must keep all paths clear and cross with caution.

Participants must provide their own bicycle and helmet and wear it fastened during the entire ride.

Day Of Checklist:

·         Check-in will start promptly at 6:30am. 

·         Arrive dressed to participate in the event with swimsuits on.

·         Take your bike to the north side of the building to the transition area. 

o    Helmets, bike, shirts with bib displayed, shoes, shorts (optional)

o    Please allow space for other participants when placing your bicycle on the rack.

·         Walk through the gymnasium doors at the transition area to the Family Recreation Center to enter the basketball courts.

·         Check-in at the age group table for the participant.  Be sure to receive the timing chip and place it on the left ankle of the participant.

·         Please check in PRIOR to 7:45am in the Gymnasiums (in the lower level of the Family Recreation Center)

·         Only 1 adult per child will be allowed in the gymnasium and pool area (see swim section for more details).

·         Only 1 adult per child will be allowed in the transition area.

What to Bring with You Checklist (suggestions):

—        Helmet (mandatory) must be fastened with chin straps during the bike portion.  Failure to do so will result in a disqualification.
