Course Descriptions:

This scenic, mountain course runs along the western edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, offering spectacular views above and below the hoodoos. The race is run at high elevation, with most of the miles on this rugged course between 8,000 – 9,000 ft.

The 100 mile course starts at turnoff to Coyote Hollow trailhead on Hwy 12, at the top of Red Canyon. Due to limited parking at the start and finish line areas, we will use a shuttle system from Ruby''s Inn, which is 5 minutes away. Shuttles start at 5am, with the last one leaving at 5:30am. If you choose to park at the starting line, be prepared to walk up to 1/2 mile or more from your vehicle. The race begins with 2 miles of dirt road approaching the Coyote Hollow trailhead (Thunder Mountain trail).   The singletrack starts with about 4 miles of going in and out of draws through a ponderosa forest then descends 1,000ft through the hoodoos. At the intersection at the bottom of the Thunder Mountain trail, you'll take a left and begin following the Grandview trail, which you'll stick to for much of the race.  The first aid station comes 2 miles after the intersection, at mile 10.5.  The route then heads south along the base of the plateau, in and out of canyons and climbing ridges until you reach Proctor Canyon aid station at mile 19. This is your first of only 3 crew access points along the course. Due to the limited parking and rough access road, we will need to shuttle your crew in the last 2 miles. From Proctor Canyon, you'll continue south through a rugged 9+ mile section, ultimately ascending up onto the rim of the Plateau at Blubber Creek Aid Station.  The next section offers some incredible views from on top, stringing together single and doubletrack for just under 8 miles the Kanab Creek Aid station. After the aid station, you'll have a couple miles more of rim running, then will depart from the Grandview trail and take a mild descent along doubletrack for 3 miles into the Straight Canyon Aid Station, your second crew access point at mile 41. From Straight Canyon Aid Station, you'll follow the dirt road for a half mile, then will take a hard right and follow some singletrack for a mile and a half before you begin the 3 mile ascent up to the Pink Cliffs Aid station at nearly 9,400ft.  From Pink Cliffs, you'll descend double track for about 2.5 miles the beautiful Crawford Pass trail, which you'll follow for another 2.5 miles to the turnaround at Crawford Pass Aid Station.  This is the third crew access point.  The finish line will be at an equestrian campground between the starting line and Coyote Hollow trailhead, 1 mile from where the race started. Shuttles will run between the finish line and Ruby's Inn for those that need it. All crew and family must take a shuttle from Ruby's to the finish line. These shuttles will be running frequently. We will encourage a quick departure from the finish line as our space is limited at this staging area.

The 50 mile course will start on Saturday morning and will be run in reverse direction. Shuttles will load at 4:30am and depart at 4:45am and the race starting at 6am.  The starting line is near the Crawford Pass aid station, 1/2 mile back, to allow for runners to spread out before hitting the singletrack and to ensure that they get the full 50 miles in.

The 50K course starts at the boat ramp area of Tropic Reservoir, near King's Creek campground.  Runners will be shuttled here from Ruby's Inn.  Shuttles will load at 7:30am and the race will begin at 8:30am. The route starts with about a half mile of road to thin the field out before hitting the singletrack which will lead you out to Keyhole Arch and some beautiful hoodoo running before descending to a doubletrack road after a couple of miles.  You'll begin a 5 mile ascent, peaking at over 9,000ft, then descending 500ft over a half mile to the Blue Fly aid station at mile 8.5.  After the Blue Fly aid station, you'll hop on a steep and scenic singletrack section that quickly descends through some hoodoos down to a doubletrack at around mile 10. You'll take a left and have a two mile climb until you meet up with the 50/100 mile route. From there, you'll take a right and descend two miles of singletrack to the Proctor Canyon aid station, your only crew access point. You'll have 8.5 miles of singletrack between Proctor Canyon and Thunder Mountain aid stations, with plenty of ups and downs through canyons and along ridges. After Thunder Mountain aid, you'll have a gradual ascent for about two miles before hitting the Thunder Mountain trail for a long and grueling climb up to the finish line.

The Half Marathon course is absolutely beautiful but very challenging. Shuttles for the Half Marathon will pick runners up at Ruby's Inn at 9:30 AM. The race starts at 10:00 AM at the entrance to Red Canyon campground and takes the Golden Wall loop, which returns to the main canyon after about 4.5 miles.  From here, head down canyon on the bike path to the Thunder Mountain trailhead, where your only aid station will be set up.  Make sure to fill up your hydration system here because it's a long and grueling 7.5 miles uphill to the finish line from here!
