Description

In January, 2022, Jimmy Rich was hit by a distracted driver while out running near his home. Jimmy had been a runner for more than 40 years and took every safety precaution that evening, but the driver “never saw him”. The resulting head injuries were too severe, and Jimmy passed away on January 25, 2022.

In an effort to bring triumph from tragedy, the Rich family wants to turn this devastating catastrophe into a call for action. Jimmy’s love of running has inspired us to create and hold the Jimmy Rich Memorial 5K walk/run race, scheduled for Saturday, October 22, at 9:00 AM at Angler’s Park in Danville, Virginia. Our goal is to use this event as a way to raise awareness for runner and pedestrian safety, as well as bring attention to the life-altering consequences of distracted driving.

GO "THE EXTRA MILE" FOR JIMMY:
Throughout his life, Jimmy strove to follow Jesus’ directive in Matthew 5:41, which says, “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” He was constantly “going the extra mile” for family, friends, acquaintances, customers, even strangers. He never hesitated to give more, stay longer, or try harder. He was a firm believer in doing everything possible to assist those who called on him—and he was called on to shoulder and answer a lot!

If Jimmy went “the extra mile” for you—or if you believe, like he did, that we can always do a little more to help those around us—we hope you’ll consider going “the extra mile” for him. After you complete the 5K portion of the race, you’ll have the opportunity to go one more mile.

This mile will not be timed, and you have the option of running, jogging, walking (or crawling, if need be!) at your desired pace. Use it as your cool down, or use it to push yourself just a little bit further—like Jimmy would. Either way, we hope you’ll choose to “go the extra mile” for Jimmy!

Groups/Teams
